I chose a midwife because
1) Although i'm sure she's very competent/capable, I don't LOVE my GP
2) I don't really feel nurtured aka motherly loved by my GP in general, just someone to go to when you're sick, need to get assessed, or need a referral
3) the nurses on the mat floor at my chosen hospital, don't love my GP
4) I was going to go to an OB, but after some advice from a maternity nurse on what my needs were...she said I should educate myself on the role of a midwife in pregnancy care
4) I was recommended a midwife group that a nurse at my chosen hospital not only loved, but also worked with...so very nurse friendly and team oriented (not all midwives are team oriented with hospital staff!)
On a biased note, right now, i'll be going with a midwife for my next baby. But of course, if I turn high risk...then an OB will be the next option.
Just some excerpts from THE ARTICLE:
4 Myths of midwifery:
1) If you go with a midwife, you CANNOT have painkillers during labour. FALSE!
2) You have to have to deliver your baby at home if you have a midwife. FALSE!
3) It is much safer to have a doctor deliver your baby than it is a midwife. FALSE!
4) Midwives are the more expensive choice. FALSE!
"...Midwives only take on a small number of patients per year based on each woman’s due date. And in the event that a woman goes into labour early, and your midwife is not available for yours, you always have a secondary midwife that you get to know during those 9 months as well. Instead of seeing your OB a few times during pregnancy, you see a midwife at least once a month. They know your name, your hubbies name, your birthing plans, your medical history, they get your test results, they watch your weight, they do regular urine samples, they give you all the same options such as prenatal testing and the “stretch and sweep” (yupp!), and an ultrasound or two… They also check in on your relationship, your thoughts and feelings. They address your questions and concerns and make you feel comfortable and prepared. And of course you get to hear the heart beat at every appointment..."
--- this is true!
--- do a self assessment and decide for yourself what is right for you and your baby!
