A Moment of Gratitude

Before we got married, Gene and I would talk about our future children- how many we would have, what we would like to name them, and just general dreams and goals for them that never REALLY went past the age of 5 years old- as then, it was just an idea.  Fastforward to after we got married, again, we had some major financial barriers to having children, and although my time was ticking, we really needed to be realistic and think about what having a child entailed.  It was definitely in the 5 year plan, but still to me, just an "idea."

Closer to the time when we were going to try (approx a year or so before and leading up to), as a nurse, of course we're familiar with how the body would function- bottom line, it's rather unpredictable! And having never been pregnant before or even off the pill, the fears and anxieties of infertility planted its nasty seeds in my head and heart.  So many questions were brewing through my head:

  • Gene is old an older guy, would that make it harder for us?
  • i've been on some form of hormone therapy since i was 17y/o-ish, would that make it harder for us?
  • Gene is a fan of BC bud, will that affect his feritlity? (LOL!)
  • Gene doesn't wear boxer shorts, is that bad for the little guys?
  • What would be our options if we couldn't have children?
  • Would we go into debt to have children or adopt children?
  • Would it make us any less of a man / woman in the OTHER person's eyes if we knew who was "the cause" of our infertility?
  • would we stick through it as a couple or would it be the downfall of our relationship?
Also, there were surges of pregnant people at work which was kind of cool. Of course I was asked when it was "my turn" and well, then I obviously didn't feel ready, but when I was ready, how hard of a time would I have?! I even said to myself I won't tell anyone until someone kind of noticed a bump (this didn't happen though) just to save face in case "something happened."

I'm pretty sure the turning point in my decision was when Sarah (yes, YOU) stated the phrase, "what are you waiting for?" on some random night shift. Things really clicked and I was on a mission since then.  Ok so I did have brewing thoughts like what stroller to buy, who I would be getting it from (Sarah haha) and even baby tips just seemed to stick in my head- but nothing super serious.  Then after her statement, I was like, "i'm waiting for nothing" in my head.  The time was right, the financial burden was ending, and really, I need to get started on a baby-making plan as who knows what type of challenge my body would present to me!  That was sometime in late 2010.

We had plans for vacation in April 2011, I was thinking of getting off the pill afterwards so I don't fck up that vacation by getting my period- but I just felt SO compelled to get off the pill in Feb.  I took a gamble, I did, and lucky enough, I didn't get my period until the 2nd last day of the vacation (though I was worried about it all throughout that week). My period cycle was 28 - 23 - 28 from Feb to April- irregular I would say?!  Anyhow, the business plan was to launch in May- I mentally and physically prepared myself for the challenges that may lay ahead, and though I didn't buy into the OPK strips (ovulation predictor kit), I did get that preseed stuff just to help things out as Sarah said that worked for her haha!

Fastforward to May 19- where the fck was my period? I want to get this started already!!

Oops, we're pregnant! We tried, but didn't really try as the preseed box was gathering dust under the sink. This lack of "effort" really contributed to my initial disconnect for this pregnancy- seriously, it's pretty pathetic that i'm complaining about how easy we got pregnant vs. being thankful that we got pregnant so easily!  Now i'm very very thankful that we were so "easily" blessed.

I really need to get my attitude together because there are so many people struggling with infertility nowadays.  I know this isn't much of a segway for the topic of infertility, but it really puts into perspective that...hmm...don't know how to explain it...that I should live in the now, feel pregnant, feel happy about it, love it, swim in it, don't hide it, because i've been blessed. Again, there are so many people struggling with infertility, I need to WAKE UP and be happy and thankful wholeheartedly that it is, what is now for me. I wonder if this makes sense?!  Anyhow, have a read at this persons blog post about her struggles...

We were naïve enough when we got married to think sex was how you made babies. I know people who knew going in to marriage that getting pregnant was going to be an issue, and they were ready to deal with it. But we didn't figure we were those people. I mean, we're both healthy. I have clock-work regular cycles. How hard could this be?
It can be real hard. And our marriage is different for it.

We've lost a lot because of our infertility.

We've lost our innocence. We know having a baby requires a lot more than just fertilizing an egg. Sometimes it requires pills and shots and tests. My big fear is we will go through all of this, get pregnant, and then have a miscarriage and not be able to take our baby home with us. I don't know that I will be able to relax the whole time I'm pregnant when/if that actually happens.

We've lost the intimacy of the process. When you're going to the doctor this frequently, and they poke something into you every time—trans-vaginal ultrasounds, needles, speculum—making a baby isn't that romantic and intimate any more. It will still be my husband and me making the baby, but we'll be doing it with outside help rather than in the intimacy of our home.

We've lost the beautiful surprise that can be finding out you are pregnant in the early morning hours before you've done your hair and while you are still waking up fully, but you decide to use a home pregnancy test because of a hunch you just might be pregnant. I've known people who have kept the results a secret from their husband until they could put together a special dinner to tell him he's going to be a daddy. We're both so aware of my cycle at this point that he pretty much knows exactly what day will be the day we find out if it worked or if we need to try again. No secrets there. Now we'll get a phone call from a nurse with the results of a blood test. It's very possible we won't even be the first to know we're expecting.

However, we've gained a lot as well. Our infertility has become a fertile ground for growth in our marriage. We talk. A lot. And regularly. We ask questions about what we do next, about what we fear, about what we don’t understand. And those talks always end up being about the rest of our lives, as well: work, school, family, vacations, dreams and hopes. We've always been good with communication. But through this we've really cemented how important it is to always talk, and listen, about everything.
We do things for each other in our marriage, so there is no doubt our fertility does not determine our love for each other, nor does it determine who we are. He makes sure I do not feel like any less of a woman because I cannot get pregnant and I make sure he does not feel like any less of a man. A lot of this is based on communication, regularly talking about all the other aspects of each other we love, everything else we've got going for us in our lives, and all the reasons we got together and got married in the first place.
Our love and life are not based on our fertility.

We've strengthened our support of each other. When I tell him the hormones are making me emotional he tells me he'll be my solid support, and he is. I've wet more than one of his shirts with my tears and snot when I just can't keep it all in any more and just have to let it all out on his shoulder. When I'm dizzy and nauseous from the extra hormones being pumped through my system he lets me sleep on the couch while he makes dinner. This process is difficult for both of us in different ways, but we make sure we are there for each other when we need it.

Our support system has grown to include close family and friends we've told. Opening up about our struggles has allowed them to open up about theirs. Each couple's journey through infertility is unique. But we have similar fears and desires. It truly is incredible how many people around us suffer through infertility in isolation. Infertility is one of the last great taboos.

We've gained an understanding of how others have their own troubles, nobody can judge the troubles of another, and the world could do with a little more sensitivity to others. Jokes about pregnancy are no longer funny to me, and I'm realizing that a lot of the things we say in jest might be an unsuspecting knife to the heart of someone else. That's not to say we stop joking, just that we try to do so with more understanding and sensitivity.

And we've gained laughter, even more than we had before. Sex itself is funny to begin with. But throw in the needles, probes, speculum, specimen cups, stirrups, catheters, and a bit of a character for a doctor—making a baby just gets funnier still.
I have never felt more vulnerable than I do right now, wanting something so badly and being almost completely helpless to control what happens. But I know he is laughing, and crying, with me through it all. This trial has strengthened and molded our relationship in a way few other things could. As he put it, every couple has trials, but that doesn't mean they have to be a net negative. This trial for us is truly turning out to be a net positive (even if I occasionally need a bag of chocolate and a good cry before I remember that again).

The Big O! (not Oprah)

Some info on Ovulation, facts and old wives tales that i've copy and pasted from a FANTASTIC forum!  Interesting info!

OVULATION FACTS-
These are the facts and experiences from forum women and doctors
  • Ovulation does not always occur on the 14th day. Every cycle is different for each woman.
  • When you get a positive OPK (ovulation predictor kit), you may have ovulated that day, or you may ovulate in the next 4-5 days at the longest extreme. Although it is usually 12-48 hours until Ovulation occurs after your first positive OPK.
  • Not everyone has ewcm (egg white cervical mucous) during ovulation. Some may only go as far as having creamy or watery, or nothing at all.

Primary Ovulation Symptoms
  • Rise in Waking temperature (A rise in temperature means you've ALREADY ovulated. Temps often decline just prior to O (ovulation) and on the day you O, but not always)
  • EWCM Cervical fluid
  • Cervical position (soft, high, open and wet)

Ovulation Secondary Symptoms
  • Mid cycle spotting
  • Pain or achiness around ovaries
  • Increased sexual feelings
  • Fuller vaginal lips
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Water retention
  • Increased energy level
  • Heightened sense of vision, smell, and taste
  • Increased sensitivity in breasts and skin
  • Breast tenderness

OLD WIVES TALES
  • Food Makes the Difference
Some wives tales focus on the food you eat when you are trying to conceive. If you want a boy - it's all red meat. And the more raw the better. Eat salty snacks like chips and pretzels, and dads should drink a lot of soda. To conceive a girl, you should be much healthier. Both partners should eat fish and vegetables. But, along with those good foods, you should give into your chocolate cravings - or so the myths go!
  • Having Fun in the Sack
Many of the discussions of gender selection involve how to be intimate. To create a boy, you're supposed to make love standing up or in a doggie position. Focus on the man's pleasure - they say if he comes first then it's more likely to be a boy. And sleep on the left side of your partner. In addition, you should have sex during a quarter moon, only at night. Try to conceive on an odd day of the month and point the woman's head north while making love!
For that girl, stick with the missionary position while focusing on her pleasure. If she has an orgasm first, it's more likely to be a girl. Make love in the afternoon with a full moon. And, of course, try to conceive on the even days of the month.
  • Some Like it Cool, Some Like it Hot
Apparently, weather and disposition also factor into many of these old wives tales. If you're relaxed when you conceive, they say it will be a girl; if you're stressed, it's bound to be a boy. Some say that a man's testicles should be cool if you want a daughter and warm for a son.

Skin Deep: Cosmetics

I'm at somewhat of a toss when it comes to choosing cosmetic products.  The fence is always between choosing awesome cosmetics vs. so-so cosmetics.   Why not choose the awesome cosmetics you ask?  Simply because of the dreaded "Dirty Dozen" - a group of nasty, possibly health and life altering chemicals that are present in these "awesome" cosmetics!  Ok, then why not choose the so-so cosmetics?  In gist, because most cost an arm and a leg to just "try" as well, some really suck in terms of color and amount payoff so what's the point of buying them right?  Why not go au-naturel then?  Not an option hahaha

According to the David Suzuki Foundation, there are 12 notorious toxic chemicals present in our everyday cosmetics (ie. shampoo, foundations, lotions, creams etc).  These chemicals can't just be classified as "carcinogens," although that word should probably scare me off already, these not-just-rash-producing chemicals  not only can cause allergic reactions but can also affect your hormone/endocrine system, reproduction system, brain function, respiratory system! Furthermore, when you wash this stuff off, it goes down the water drains and starts affecting the wildlife! And on top of it all, not everything is regulated or has to be fully revealed to the consuming public in the jargon-filled ingredient label!  Crazy sheit hey?!

The Dirty Dozen (find a very detailed pdf description HERE)
  1. BHA and BHT
  2. Coal tar dyes: p-phenylenediamine and colours listed as "CI" followed by a five digit number
  3. DEA-related ingredients
  4. Dibutyl phthalate
  5. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
  6. Parabens (this sheit is everywhere!)
  7. Parfum (a.k.a. fragrance) - also everywhere
  8. Polyethyline glycol (PEG) compounds
  9. Petrolatum
  10. Siloxanes (chemicals ending with "-siloxane" or "-methicone")
  11. Sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate
  12. Triclosan

Anyone else feel itchy after reading that?  Or how about feeling cross-eyed?  Did you have a similar reaction to mine- "WTF, how the heck am I supposed to remember all of that?" LOL!  Luckily, the researchers thought of everything!

***************************************

I'm just a link lover on this blog post hey?  Anyhow, I can't say i'm a product queen, but this really opens up my eyes about a lot of issues.  From what i've read, just because it says organic DOESN'T mean it's all that clear and free from some of these chemicals!  I'm going to try use up what I have instead of flushing it down the drain(!!), and really start up on a journey into becoming a non-obsessed-psychopath cosmetic label reader (omg, food label reader is ANOTHER story that I might just attempt to post on one day).

I really don't know if I can give up everything considering everything in this world seems to cause cancer anyways (even breathing for goodness sakes) but I will definitely reduce my exposure to these carcinogens!  Our SKIN is the largest organ in our body!  And you know what? It's very POROUS!

Week 5, WTF Moment

Today is day 8 of my period, and as expected, my period would be dying down.  In the recent days, my period had dwindled from heavy, to moderate, to dying down but not over.  Essentially, from full pads to the thin flow pads, but not yet panty liner stage.

Sadly, I was woken up this morning by a) a full bladder, b) a restless partner, and c) "tingling" sensation down there.  I thought I could let it go as a WTF moment, but the bladder was too full and I was conscious enough of it that I couldn't ignore it any further.  On my way to the bathroom, I felt more tingling, and lo and behold, much to my surprise- lets just say - DAY 1 TYPE OF FLOW!  WTF!  I was seriously shocked, pissed, disappointed, and had to think enough that I couldn't get myself back to sleep once I was done freshening up.

I thought of what could've caused such ANNOYING irregularities?  The daytime flow was weak!
  • Dinner from last night? (White Spot pulled pork sandwich)
  • That egg mcmuffin I ate? (filler and hormones in that "sandwich?")
  • Just being off the pill in general (my first cycle)
  • Stress (bad work week)
  • Fatigue (still have not recovered from my work set)

Idiopathic things I definitely can't explain, and nor can the internet!  Normal is what's normal for each individual.  I dare not waste more than 5 minutes researching patterns of irregularity, especially when it comes to the female body.  So, I just took the day in stride and treated myself to what would be a Day 1 type of day.

Fortunately/unfortunately the flow of the day was like small to scant.  I wonder what type of hormones was circulating in my body at night to produce such "horrifying" day 8 results.  Started the day off saying WTF, ending the night off with a WTF.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring?  Hope next cycle is more predictable, this blasted period better not ruin my upcoming vacation!

Que sera, sera...

Week 4, no Birth Control, In Review

Feb 28 ----> Awesome news, I got my period on the day it would've arrived if I were still on the pill!

March 1 ---> Heavy ass period, like heaviest that I can remember in a long time!  Almost high school days heavy!

March 5 ----> Sheitty news, I still have my period! Definitely on the dying stages, but not enough to be pad free.  UGH!!

I've been pretty much at work this entire week.  One of the few things I remember this week though is that I really didn't handle the stressors of work too well.  I felt like I couldn't catch up on what was going on during the day and night shifts and was always behind.   However, there were contributing factors like 1) Just received a new preceptor student that had absolutely no clinical experience in the last 2 months.  and 2) the shit hit the fan essentially every shift I had this week, subjectively and objectively! Wtf?!

Ate pretty crappy this week!  As in, ate at A&W which is soooo nasty, and had a McDonald's breakfast which I like, but my stomach never feels full and more acidic than any other meal I eat --probably due to lack of dietary fibre, and abundance of filler in that egg mcmuffin meal.

Skin was alright, had minor break out (again on my chin, and again WTF?) which I even continue to dry up with my magic masque even to this day!

I want my period to be over already!! Sheesh!
If I were still on the pill, this day 6 would be like the "i'm done day."

Will monitor

Week 3, No Birth Control, In Review

Week 3 has been slightly more problematic than other weeks, here's a review:

Eating: I continue to eat well and lots of fruit, an active decision- thanks Costco for the wonderful frozen fruit selection at reasonable prices!  I did buy a bag of chips this week, but that's because it was on sale and it was my favorite.  However, I was actually feeling repulsed by the chips as the week and the chips bagended, and currently have no further cravings!  Eating has been satisfactory though as we on a lazy night whim ate at the dreaded McDonalds.  I had a big mac meal, awesome fries, awesome thirst quenching-feels-so-good-fountain pop, and a less than stellar burger which I donated a patty off to dear husband.  The burgers honestly smell better than they taste, not much to my surprise.

Skin: mild to moderate breakout this week on my chin (WTF?!).  Although even on the pill I did have a breakout days prior to period time.  Definitely used a lot of my "magic mask" to dry out those suckers.  Ugh!  Maybe it's a coincidence, but this has been the first time I ate at McDonald's this year (i'm 95%) sure, so maybe that has something to do with the breakout?  Will monitor next month.

Mood:  Last sat, around the 19th, I woke up feeling good and had the stillness of the apartment all to myself.  Then at the hours when people woke up and people started calling, I felt INSTANTLY annoyed at the sound of their voices.  Don't know why.  Maybe it was just lingering dread that it was a superb saturday and while everyone had a day off, it was my Sunday technically, and the dread of work the next day really irritated me.  I did however was able to hear myself constantly and the tone of my voice and talk my way down (in my head) from reacting and acting out on my innocent family members.  Husband pissed me off quite a bit this week, probably because, well I think because he's not match for my arguing skills and resorts to using expletives to mark the occasion (not necessarily directed at me), whereas I don't and can express myself through reasonable vocabulary.  Yep, that's his tactics...soooo annoying and lame.

Body: Went to yoga twice this week just to cool off from the frustrations of my days off.  Feeling fit!  Not sleeping the good 10+ hours I like when i'm off, probably getting around 7-9 hours sleep only (yeah yeah don't shoot me! haha).  My period, if I were still on the pill, is slated for around Feb 28th/March 1st.  No cramps, but I do feel that heaviness in my lower abdomen, like you know you're "full" and you just need to get rid of that old uterine lining asap! hahaa

Week 2, No Birth Control, In Review

Week 2 has been remarkable, again no acute issues!

Eating: I continue to eat well and lots of fruit, an active decision.  I have this new found aversion to chips though!  This is a miracle as chips were my almost every other day indulgence for as long as I can remember (and to note I was on the pill for as long as I can remember).  I had an urge to buy a day ago, so I did, and after eating a few bites, i was like "enh, i don't feel like eating anymore."  This isn't even some active decision, I actually DID NOT feel like eating chips!  My usually trigger for the salty goodness is a really hard day at work, my set starts this Sunday, I will monitor.

Skin: no breakouts, maintaining a healthy diet and same skin care.

Mood: I did buy a watch, ahem, a luxurious watch but that is IT.  I've commited to saving some money since I want some renovations done, and well i'm just sick of "stuff."  Yes, this is really me typing this! hahaa.  I have noticed that i'm thinking more clearly when I fight with the husband.  I'm able to say to myself things such as "let it go," "just ignore the idiocy," "watch your tone or you'll take the argument to a whole different level." LOL!  Also, the lingering anger doesn't stay too long, i'm able to be a bigger person and initiate the path to atonement.

Body: Went to yoga yesterday, feeling good.  I wish I hadn't googled as to when I was supposed to be ovulating (15th or 16th), or talked about what ovulating felt like with my friends as on the 15th and 16th of this month, I felt sharps aches in the right lower quadrant area of my abdomen where I picture my right ovaries are.  LOL!  I'm still not sure!   I was reading up on information regarding cervical mucous and fertility...I think that's going to be a whole new other post.  Let's just say, I haven't put the theory into practice.

Week 1, no Birth Control, in Review

Well it's been a status quo week, and this is a good thing!  My period ended February 5th/6th and i've now been 10 days birth control free!  Let's break things down in categories to sum up my experiences:

Eating: eating well, no chips or sweets cravings.  Had 2 burgers back to back but that was because I had a date as well as meet up with friends.  I find that I don't feel the need to finish my plate, when i'm full, i'm pretty full and stop.  Maintaing a high fibre breakfast with fruit smoothies, no binge urges.

Skin: no major breakouts, maintaining a healthy diet and same skin care.

Mood: some urges to shop, and by shop I want big bold things.  Otherwise, no emotional outbursts.  Sleeping just as good.  And things that my husband does that instigate a fight and annoy the shiet out of me, i'm able to set aside faster and be nice.

Body: starting weight not so pretty, but going to yoga today.  Minor spotting but just in random moments with no obvious precursor.

Yes!

I stopped the Pill!

By some strange turn of events, I decided to stop taking birth control pills!  LOL!  My cycle just finished, I got sick of taking pills, I regret paying the $31 for 3 months worth of pills that i'm not going to use.  I'm excited yet not excited to see how my body reacts.  I'm going to load up on fruits, and watch my diet!!

Exciting!!

Last Day for the Pill!

My next booked vacation will be in the early April time.  This year, we really want to go somewhere as we fortunately/unfortunately no longer have to set up arrangements for the house sitting of our cat (R.I.P Mazoola).  As this will be our first real vacation, I really don't want to screw it up by having a period!  Ugh!  So i've decided to continue taking my birth control pills until then.

The absolute last day, and coincidently, the last day of the 3 month prescription, is April 22nd.  After that day, my period should start around April 25th, and in theory, I would've had to start taking the pill again on April 30th.  Starting that month, I will be birth control free!!  Hurray!!  Gives me three months to think and prepare.

Here's a cool ticker that I will occasionally attach to my postings marking April 22nd!

Foods and Things to Avoid While Pregnant

There are sadly foods that one should avoid while being pregnant.  Just for 9 months right? And if that's what it takes to ensure better chances of having a healthy happy baby, like Nike says, "JUST DO IT!"

Firstly, What are the bad food bacteria?
  • LISTERIA- causes listeriosis.  Causes miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn.
  • CAMPYLOBACTER- source food poisoning.  Causes diarrhea, cramps, fever.  Detrimental to the mom and babe if liquids and electrolytes aren't replaced.
  • SALMONELLA- source of fod poisoning.  Causes diarrhea, cramps, fever.  Detrimental to the mom and babe if liquids and electrolytes aren't replaced.
  • TOXOPLASMOSIS- parasite found in cat poop, and may be found in dirt in unwashed fruits/veg, undercooked meat.  click here for more info Toxoplasmosis and Pregnancy
  • High doses of VITAMIN A- high doses can cause liver toxicity and birth defects.

Here is a small compiled list of foods to avoid from HealthCastle.com:
  • Raw Meats and Seafood including sushi - all uncooked and rare meats and seafood should be avoided due to high risk of listeria and salmonella poisoning.
  • Deli meats including hot dogs - these deli meats might be contaminated with listeria bacteria which may result in miscarriage or even a stillbirth. It's safe to eat deli meats if you reheat them until steaming hot.
  • Refrigerated smoked seafood - for the same reason of listeria contamination. It is safe if they are contained in cooked dishes. Canned and shelf-stable versions are safe to eat.
  • Raw eggs - raw eggs may contain salmonella. Some Caesar salad dressings, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream and custards as well as Hollandaise sauces may be made with raw eggs. It is best to check with your server in a restaurant; if in doubt, it is best to avoid it. In addition, unpasteurized eggnog should be avoided.
  • Fish high in mercury - avoid high-mercury fish such as Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel and Tilefish. Also limit fish intake to no more than 2 servings per week.
  • Soft cheese - avoid the following soft cheeses: Feta, Brie, and Camembert cheeses, blue-veined cheeses, queso blanco, queso fresco and Panela. They are safe to eat if they are labelled pasteurized.
  • Refrigerated pâtes or meat spreads - for the same reason of listeria contamination. It is safe to eat the canned or shelf-stable versions.
  • Liver - liver is a rich source of iron. However it contains a high level of Vitamin A. Large amounts of Vitamin A can be harmful to the baby.
  • Unpasteurized milk and juices
  • Alcohol - many documented fetal abnormalities and birth defects have been associated with alcohol use during pregnancy.

More foods to avoid not listed above from various websites are:
  • Caffeine (affects the iron absorbing ability of the baby)
  • SMOKING (for obvious reasons)
  • Various medications (check with your doctor or pharmacists before using anything, even over the counter stuff)
  • artificial sweetners (aspertame, sucralose etc)
  • Shellfish (just make sure the stuff is cooked, ie. no raw oysters)
  • Raw sprouts (alfalfa, radish, clover as they may contain bacteria such as E. coli)
  • Pre-prepared salads (coleslaw, potato salads that are pre-packaged for listeria risks)

of the foods above, i'm really sad about SUSHI!  I'm hungry just thinking about it!  Even if you don't eat the raw sashimi, I wouldn't be 100% trustworthy that the sushi maki rolls are ok as they must cut those rolls on the same cutting board as the sashimi.  Sad!
