Second Time Mama Baby Essentials!

One of the most overwhelming tasks about parenting is figuring out what you want vs. what you actually need (y'know, as with everything else in life!). There are so many guides out there, and each household will essentially be different depending on how you spend your day to day and it especially will be based on the needs and budget of your family. For my first baby, these items were essential to me. For my second baby, I overall have less time to contemplate on stuff and more focused on the pragmatic aspect of parenting that worked for me with #1. My current must have's are pictured above!

I'm now carrying items for two children (!!) and have turned to this bag as my new diaper bag. I like using the backpack to keep me hands free, especially with a rambunctious potty training toddler. This bag seems to be a bottomless pit of a carrier that carries all our current needs like extra clothes, snacks, water bottle, pacifiers, as well as new born stuff like umpteen diapers, wipes, and clothes. it's water resistant and most importantly, fits in the basket of our umbrella stroller.

I used these with Max and 4 years later, I'm using them with Mikkel. Much cheaper than another famous brand, but essentially the same. Huge (48x48), lasts in the laundry, works as a swaddler, burp cloth, nursing cover, blanket for winter and summer. Love these!

I borrowed this from my sister and loving it! It is currently sitting on a bedside table on my side of the room. I like that it's near see through because of the mesh, it's lightweight and portable, and the mattress comes out because some time during the night the little one eventually sleeps beside me. Even though i have my worries re: co-sleeping, i feel safer with her sleeping on the firm pad that's just out of the ordinary enough that i don't get too comfortable. so far so good!

I don't remember leaking this much or even at all with Max, but these are necessary for anyone who's milk has come in at a fierce rate. If I weren't wearing these, just the smallest amount of pressure on one breast has me drenched! Heck, even brushing up on the nipple of a breast activates my let down and I'm just a sticky mess.

Max, baby, and I sleep with a night light on for my anxiety. Max doesn't seem to mind, I can see the baby, and I don't have to wake up the entire room to do any feeding. I'm usually sensitive to lights, especially the glow of digital clocks, but a night light tucked away at a far away corner has proven to be pragmatic and helpful.

6) Lanolin

21 days in, and i'm still using this product. No cracks or bleeding even during my initial week of getting my nipples used to breastfeeding again. After combing my hair, it's the next thing I grab after a shower...dry nipples and breastfeeding? no thanks! must must must have for anyone with a newborn.

I bought this when Max was a baby and it still serves us to this day almost 4 years later! Definitely necessary with a newborn for the random diaper changes that need to happen whether it'd be in a public change station, someone's home, and heck even the grass at the local park. I don't like the wipes case that comes with it, but it can be easily replaced with the packaged Kirkland wipes from Costco. With Max, he isn't potty trained with poops yet, so when he asks for a diaper and subsequent change, this item also allows me to care for him.  When I feel like carrying the bare minimum, this carries diapers and wipes for both kids, a hand sanitizer, and my nursing cover. awesome in my book!

Love this bralette because it doesn't have a cup size, it just fits at my largest and eventually at my smallest. The price is right. The Lansinoh breast pads fit easily in the space and it's seamless.

Love this nursing cover over others because of the boning that allows me to see the baby while I nurse. It folds easily to fit in my Changing Station, its lasted throughout Max's breastfeeding course, and now through Mikkel's journey. I've used it at weddings and public spaces where I want to maintain my own comfort while feeding...genius product!

I hope this list makes your shopping list a little less overwhelming!
Happy shopping especially during this cold dreary day!

Harmonica Love

we recently came across a couple of Harmonica's and just had to buy them. we've been slowly accumulating some random instruments at home with the intention that Max will one day play them. but y'know instruments are such an individual thing and in my opinion you really need to be called by the instrument to endure such a love affair. commitment, passion, hard work, happiness, connection with the music...it's like a freakin' relationship.

anyhow, the harmonica has been such invaluable source of entertainment lately. when we first whipped it out of the packaging, he reached for it right away...probably because it was nice and shiny...but he didn't let go of it because he was interested. first and foremost, the instrument is great for toddlers as the skill to produce lovely sounds involves some simple breathing. sure the sounds aren't official songs (but really, the beauty blues harmonica is how cathartic it is, is there really sheet music for it? i don't know), but it took Max all of 5 tries to understand how to play and slide his mouth left to right as he blows (or more precisely, exhale and inhale to create sound).

i love how the harmonica is apartment friendly, pocket friendly, handbag friendly; just take it and go! lately Max has taken it to my parents house, the park, and the mall as his carry around toy. i can totally picture Max keeping this in his back pocket say in high school and whipping it out to woo some friends (or girls) with his mad blues skills! haha! i know a little too ahead of myself, but start them young and so many years to enjoy and practice!

because we got 2 harmonica's, i've also been on youtube trying to learn how to play myself. um, i've watched 2 youtube video's and barely have advanced passed how to hold the thing! it's not easy, and you have to wrap your mouth/lips a certain way around the holes so you aren't always playing two notes but able to selectively play notes as individuals, as pairs, as groups, and do tricks that involve hand movement and inhaling and exhaling. let me reiterate, it's not as easy as it looks! all fun times nevertheless.

i totally recommend a harmonica, that is a real harmonica vs. plastic play things you can buy at the local big box store. sounds better, plays easier, and if you think of it from an development investment point of view, wow the talent to be had can be mind blowing. love love love for years to come.

Review of My 10 Most Used Meal Products

Besides lots of smiles, words of encouragement, spoonfuls of food pretending to be airplanes, and sound effects galore, what else has made our food journey fun? Meal time products of course! Here are my opinions of my most frequently used products:

YES: First and foremost, the bag is adorable, I am personally content just looking at the bag! The lining keeps food cool or warm depending on how it was recently prepared. The zip is strong -enough that you stuff this bag with 'tall' foods like an apple and still be able to zip with ease. The cavity is deep and holds enough grub for a kid sized appetite. The bag is nicely compact and can easily be stuffed in my stroller undercarriage without taking up too much room, or even hang from the 'mommy hook' without being too cumbersome.
NO: What im not loving about this bag though is that the placement of foods isn't oriented vertically but instead, horizontally. I had to buy leak proof glassware in case Max's food involved soups/liquids as when placed in the lunch bag, the food is lying down. To tote, the bag has to be upright and the food is then tilted on its side just asking for a leaking mess! I highly recommend purchasing leak resistant  containers, or better yet, pack a sandwich!

  • Silver Curved Spoon

I have two sets of spoons that i've been feeding Max with, standard baby spoons and this curved silver spoon.
YES: At first I wasn't fond of the design of this silver spoon because I just wasnt seeing it as very ergonomic compared to the standard long handled utensil, but as Max got bigger (and mouth and appetite got bigger), this curved spoon has become the perfect shovel for the near bottomless pit. My index and middle finger and thumb work in unison to allow me to feed Max with ease. I can scoop plenty of food, no inkling of cramping or awkwardness in the hand, the spoon is light, it's very ergonomic and fitting for my feeding style and positions sometimes necessary to do so.  I like that i can feed with my left and right hand, and both techniques are comfortable with this spoon style. The spoon is compact in size, the scoop is akin to a teaspoon in quantity and not at all too big for Max's baby mouth. this will be a nice heirloom and the silver will last the test of time. My favourite baby feeding utensil!
NO: what i dont like about this spoon is merely personal preference- it oxidizes (naturally). so if you want a shiny utensil you have to use silvo to wipe of the black. when it comes to Max's health vs. a shiny spoon, Max wins.

This OXO tot plate has been perfect for the little man who is now feeding himself more efficiently.
YES: It's a nice size that fits plenty of food. I like that it's not divided because grownup plates aren't divided and Max should learn from the beginning that the world won't end if different foods touch each other! Although not slip proof, it has a slip resistant weighted bottom which makes life easier for Max when he's trying to pick up food or even use a spoon, and the plate isn't moving around all over the tray. It's sturdy- it at least provides some obstacle (albeit minimal) when the little one feels like using this as a frisbee instead of a plate (which he surprisingly has not as the shape doesnt have any overhangs for picking up)! What i love most about it is the removable green ring that acts as a lip- it actually helps Max keep the food on his plate. The concave angle pushes the food back onto the spoon and when using his hands, aids Max in keeping the food on his fingers instead of the high chair tray (80% kept on plate, 20% on tray). Easy to clean, no BPA, dishwasher safe, microwaveable, and bonus marks for being attractive!

This Mally Bib has been with Max since our food journey started
YES: It's the ultimate in practicality as food + baby = messy, and nothing beats just easily washing a bib with soap and water, let air dry, and use again for the next meal. The bib is made of leather and has a strong magnetic snap behind the neck that can easily be pulled off by a parent but not so easy for a child (been there!). Furthermore, the magnetic snap is great for sticking on the fridge when done with- no more looking around for another bib! it is easily foldable and thus yet another item we tote around in Max's lunchbag. The bib comes in two sizes, one for babies and another for toddlers. at 1 year old of average weight and height, his baby sized bib still has plenty of room before I need to move up to the next level. Bonus points for the bib being reversible! the other side of THIS particular design is a beige and light brown combination with a pocket that probably serves the purpose of catching foods that don't make it into the mouth.
NO: What i dont like about it being leather is that it is starting to smell like an old dish cloth. Have i washed it too many times? Does it need a good roast under the sun to burn the smell off? Fortunately, the smell isnt overpowering enough to affect Max's appetite. nevertheless, ive been using the reverse side with pocket just to deter potential appetite busters. Also, im not loving the retail price for this bib, approximately $37! I guess if you count the number of bibs you need to buy and launder, plus the energy costs it takes to launder, this justifies the price...but i still say OUCH!
*Bought it on ebay

I used to carry Max's dry snacks in a ziploc bag, but the crunchies created holes in the ziploc bags from our wear and tear and thus needed to be replaced almost weekly (not very ecofriendly i know). This reusable snack cup has been our contribution to the environment for toting around dry snacks.
YES: it is small in size, holds enough food for a toddler's appetite, fits perfectly in little hands, the opening is perfect for little hands to pull food out, and thus yet another item always carried in Max's lunch bag. The sides have a grip-rubbery texture to it (similar to the base of the OXO plate) so when Max is running around, it isn't flying off of his hands. I love that the open/close lid is not only a learning opportunity, but is attached (and removeable if need be) so i dont need to go looking for lost lids in my kitchen or wherever it was dropped in public spaces. Currently, Max is still in the process of learning how to open the lid, but is quite content with it closed as he uses it as a rattle until he notices what's making the sound- and then he wants it opened. This 'rattle' also has its downside though as Max doesnt yet know that a closed lid will keep contents inside, so i'll let you figure out what happens next (supervise your kids)!
NO: The lid is not air tight. Though great for little learners as it won't snap on fingers, it also does not keep whatever is inside fresh for more than 24 hours. i'm in the habit of clearing Max's lunch bag every night and if there's crunchies left inside the snack cup, i just put the entire cup in a ziploc bag and take it out again for the next meal. Yes it's another ziploc bag, but it gets near infinite use. if dropped (read thrown) on the ground, the lid will not always stay closed, potential mess. What I wish this snack cup had was a ring so i can attach it to the stroller or shopping cart with stroller links and Max can feed himself. But with such a wide opening, i think it's best that a parent hold it anyways to prevent big spills!
*Given to me by Happy Baby Daily Needs

I've been using this snack cup for the stroller as evidenced by the attached stroller rings. It took a couple of days for Max to figure out to put his hand in and then out, but now all is well.
YES: I like the fact that if Max needs an extra snack, i just empty out the snack disk or snack cup in this and let him feed himself while on the stroller or even while sitting on a shopping cart! Anything that promotes hands-free parenting and kids-learning-for-themselves, is a must try in my book! The lid snaps on easily and i've had no problem with it falling off when Max is using this as yet another rattle. The lid wings are spill resistant (not spill proof)- yes, even some mild shaking will result in some fallen Nutrios, but not as much as if it were a wide open mouth.
NO: Of course, as the lid has slits, it will not keep crunchies fresh, so it is best to empty out into an air tight container at the end of the day or they'll get very stale by the morning. I'm not sure if it's the lid design or just the way Max grabs food but when he pulls food out, it's like extra crunchies pop out from the cup or from the pile he grabbed. Either a technique thing on his part or that the flexible rings are just a little tough to pull his hand through easily. Learning process.
*bought at Superstore

Setting the breast aside, Max's second form of acquiring liquids has been this ZOLI bot cup. It took about a week for him to figure out how to use it but afterwards, he's been loving this cup!
YES: The two 'arms' of the cup allows for Max to hold onto this cup on his own easily and shake it around like a rattle with ease. The lid has an attached cover for the straw when not in use- just slide on/slide off, nothing is lost after a washing, and the straw isn't contaminated when not in use. There is a valve system with the straw so that if turned on its side, liquid is not pouring out. The valve is also weighted and moves around based on Max's orientation, so wherever the liquid is located Max is able to get a drink. Honestly, I think there's something about the straw that has him preferring this cup over other straw cups. He just rejects 98% of straw cups unless the straw is as thin and as soft/flexible (read durable teething toy).
NO: What I don't like about this cup though is that it is pricey! Also, i think it's imperative to buy the ZOLI replacement/cleaning kit (more expenses) as that pipe cleaner/cleaning brush is needed to clean inside the straw. Max only drinks water from this cup but i see black particles (God forbid it's related to mold) inside the straw so i have to clean it weekly. Is it mold? Is it dirt? I dont know what it is but it's cleaned/brushed through under running water until visibly clean. i've also noticed a few times that whenever i have flicked open the lid, i get sprayed with water. again, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt, but im just glad it's water for now.
*i bought this at Lussobaby

I bought this to store Max's food as it claims to have a 'no-leak lid.'
YES: Well my friends, it hasn't leaked liquids even when toted around in Max's aforementioned lunch bag! Microwave and dishwasher safe, no stains or smells, moderately heavy but as expected for glassware. I like that for cleaning, it's easy to separate the lid from the rubber ring that keeps it a 'no-leak' product. It's also nice to have that vent on the lid for microwaving so if your food splatters, it's not all over inside the microwave. i tend to just remove the lid altogether and cover the food with a paper towel so im not microwaving plastic, personal preference.
NO: What I am not loving is that whenever i open the lid the ring partially separates from the lid. Not sure why. Not a huge deal for dry food but when packing wet food there's just a bit of a mess all over the lid that needs to be scraped off from the two parts.
*bought this at Walmart

This snack disk has been a useful snack reservoir for my snacks, but has also been used for Max's crunchies.
YES: i love that the lid is air tight and keeps our food fresh! its been real handy lately to have some extra snacks as Max's meals just seem to go right through him (it's nice to have options for him too). carrying extra snacks has also become a bit of a gimmick we use to keep him busy and still in the high chair at restaurants so we can eat in peace! It's compact, has a slip resistant bottom for when Max eats out of it, and the spaceship like shape to it is designed to aid in containment in case of a spill (again, spill resistant not spill proof)! bonus points for lid staying in place whenever this has been thrown/dropped/slipped onto the floor! for my personal use, it's been handy to carry snacks from the bulk section. i think it carries up to about a cup/250mls worth of food. i dont always find it necessary to snack, but great for relieving transit related nausea. i used to keep my purse snacks in a ziploc bag or  tupperware but this is so much better in appearance, durability, and size. easy to clean inside and outside. dishwasher safe, no BPA.
NO: With the diameter of this snack disk being fairly wide, it doesn't really fit into Max's lunch bag along with everything else i want to take so this is kept in my purse or backpack as a just-in-case source.  also, i wish this product had a ring so i can attach it to a bar and give Max the opportunity to feed himself. the lid is also separate and not attached, it has the potential to be lost.
*given to me by Happy Baby Daily Needs

I use this straw cup for Max's non-water beverages, which at his age is really just whole milk. It's appropriate for ages 18 months+ hence the general large size of the container. This is the ONLY straw cup next to his Zoli that Max will use!
YES: the only 2 things i love about this cup is that it is super easy to take apart and clean- even the straw connection. I have not noticed any residue in the straw like i have with the Zoli cup, probably because soap can flow through the straw when washed!
NO: What i don't like about this cup is that there are no arms for Max to hold onto it more effectively. There also is no valve at the end of the straw so sometimes if i'm not paying attention, Max is trying to drink but no fluids are coming up until i tilt or turn the cup in a functional angle/position. There is also a crappy  transparent lid that comes with this cup, it turns clockwise/counter clockwise to tuck in the straw when not in use, it isnt attached so losing it is possibility. After Max drinks from this and has milk still in the tubing, if he shakes this cup- milk is flying, if left unattended on the ground after he drops it- milk is leaking on the ground from the straw opening (no valve), and if i turn the 'lid' to hide the straw, milk will be leaking from the cup (i dont know why). Most annoying of all, sometimes milk is just erupting out of the straw as if a ghost was sucking on it (yes, while upright and untouched) it creates such a mess and wastes expensive milk! Finally, Max loves chewing on the straw every now and then, and there are no replacement kits. I'd have to buy a new cup once the straw has broken down.

Despite these issues, i'd still buy this because it's so easy to clean, especially once Max's beverage choices has expanded

BOBA Air Review

As a new mom, im still learning the differences between 'what to bring' and 'need to bring' during my outings with baby Max. If I could, I wouldn't mind taking a little bit of everything in his nursery just so i'm well prepared for whatever surprises that might come our way!  One of the many things that i always have with me is a baby carrier. This is especially important for those times when baby just either needs a position change or be close to mamma- believe me when i say that it is physically uncomfortable to carry around a growing distractible baby in your arms (read restless and heavy), while maneuvering a stroller, all while trying to get the purpose of your outing dealt with...oh and trying to reach your purse for your wallet or a snack for baby who doesn't want to be let go! Ow!

I have the Ergo Carrier, it's amazing and comfortable but it is huge. it takes up all the valuable real estate in my stroller undercarriage and because the carrier was such a necessity, i had to really prioritize what i bought or brought along with me. Just by chance, I read a posting about the Boba Air on Mrs. Loquacious' blog. A carrier that i've never heard of! light? compact? comfortable? Sold!
BOBA is an American company that you don't hear of too much up here in Canada. Thank you smart citizens of the world for creating a carrier that weighs less than a pound, the size of a cosmetic bag, but can support a 15-45lb child!

book, ShawTV remote, 11 month old foot ...what a convenient size!

these two exothermic men love being so close together, especially when it's cold out!

What I love about it:

  • size and weight, portability, convenience
  •  I felt comfortable with Max and that Max was safe and comfortable
  • it's black...goes with everything. great for winter months to absorb heat
  • familiarity: the position of the straps and buckles are similar to the ergo (upper back and around the waist)
  • ergonomic: the position of the straps allowed for dispersed weight distribution. in reality, you will be hurting after carrying a baby for a long time. but with ergonomics in mind, you wont be hurting as fast and or as much
  •  the straps are adjustable, and do not need an extension around the waist for the rubenesque mommas
  • self storing: it folds back into its pouch easily...like it literally takes a minute!
  • its nylon, just less material to deal with for those hot days
  • 'facing me' position with a well supported 'sitting down' position of the baby
  • can be used to carry the baby on your back- like a backpack (though i haven't tried this yet as Max is too small in my opinion)
  •  i was worried that the lack of padding would dig into Max's thighs after being in it for a prolonged period of time, but as long as he's wearing pants or shorts (not bare-thighed onesie), there is no digging into the skin or red marks
  • the conveniently located pouch/pocket to store the utmost essentials
  • the sleeping hood that snaps onto your collar bone area
  • the adjusting straps are long so if you're not that flexible it's easy to just reach back, pull, and adjust for your comfort
  • easy to do by yourself
  • the non-padded straps are actually NOT uncomfortable
  • as long as you're wearing a shirt, or at least have some sort of fabric on your upper body, the buckles will NOT dig into your bony prominences
  • i was able to fit it in my purse when travelling, instead of taking up room in my carry on luggage
  • it fit in the glove compartment of our vehicle! think emergency, and you really just got to pack up and go

What I wasn't loving:

  •  as above, as long as you're wearing a shirt or some fabric, the buckles will not dig into your boney prominences. with a tank top and Max's weight, i can feel the buckles dig into my scapula's at times
  • it's nylon. i dont think this is breathable fabric, so im not too sure how sweaty Max will get in the summer
  • it's black. summer, heat absorption
  • because the straps are not padded it was not always noticeable that i had twisted the straps as i put it over my arms/shoulders. with Max on and me trying to buckle and secure him on, i was having trouble doing so by myself because the buckles weren't facing the proper way. had to restart with an impatient baby!
  • the pocket/pouch though convenient, has no surrounding padding so i would not put too much stuff in there and treat it like a purse - read, the baby will feel the jagged keys! like i said, just take the essentials!

Overall, I highly recommend the Boba Air. it has totally changed the quality of my outings with Max as   he has the option to be closer to me on demand and i can utilize my stroller storage more efficiently! i carry this around with me all the time while out and about!

After a few hours of googling (and a lot of frustration after reading "cannot be shipped internationally," or being automatically redirected off the site as im on a Canadian network -ahem, Boba website!),  thank you Happy Baby Daily Needs for being the only company in Vancouver/Lower Mainland/Greater Vancouver area to sell this product!

2012 Gift Guide #3: Your Loved One(s) Due With Their First Baby VERY Soon!

Sleepers from WALMART. The ones pictured are footless, but they have plenty to choose form with feet for the babies younger than 12 months old. i LOVE the Walmart ones as they ZIPPER. I despise buttons/snaps. 3 sleepers for $12 (all sizes)

Velcro swaddler option. I used and loved both the SUMMER INFANT and the HALO SLEEP SACK.

for the mom's choosing to breastfeed, and especially those exclusively breastfeeding, their nipples need LANOLIN.

i was a new mom who wanted to feed my baby in public on demand, but i didnt want to reveal my breasts to the whole world. this nursing cover Really helped me. I liked the BEBE AU LAIT ones because the boning allowed me to see the baby, as well as provide a route for air circulation (it was really hot under there).

im very biased to the ERGO BABY CARRIER. ive used it from when Max was born (about 8lbs) and still use it to this day (at 22lbs). There are plenty more years (and weight gain leaps) left in our baby-ergo-mamma relationship!

As a bonus (but not as a replacement for the ERGO), i highly recommend the BOBA Air! This little thing about the size of a cosmetic bag is the saving grace for a fussing baby who needs a position change (or just mom/dad). Mine is always in my undercarriage, whipped out at a time of need. Perfect item for those who want a carrier option that doesnt take up too much stroller/purse/diaper bag/luggage real estate! Sold locally at happy baby daily needs.

Want, Need, Wear, Read: Gift Guide Part 2

i really love the concept of want, need, wear, and read in gift giving. 4 gifts for the little one(s) but they dont have to be huge or expensive.  it goes without saying, 'something they want,' 'something they need,' 'something to wear,' and something to read.' instead of buy anything and everything, there is purpose and sense in the gift buying!

want:
(ok Max is too young to want anything but this is something cute that id want for him in the future) there should always be time to get messy and let imagination run free! im really digging the stamp sets from Yellow Owl Workshop  sold at Raspberrykids Especially the Beach and Circus set.

There are so many stamp set companies out there, but something about these just seem so much prettier! Like i want to make the same scene on the box with my own set, have a vast array of colored stamp pads, and heck ill find a reason just to use them. when Max is a little older, I see us making our little scenes and creating various paper projects on a rainy Vancouver day, with some pumpkin chocolate chip muffins baking in the the oven. Yes please!

need:
as Max is our first baby (and grandchild), my family and i are all about picture taking and documentation. Max wont be this small forever! to document how the little man is growing physically, we sought out a keepsake growth chart that was not only sturdy, but hung on the wall (as opposed to the wall decals). im really digging these growth charts by EEBOO.

It's hardcover, award winning, and they have many growth chart design options! We loved the outer space theme. It comes with stickers to apply when he turns 1 yr old to 10 yrs old, and more in between. From my escapades, it can be found at Chapters, Dilly Dally on Commercial Drive (awesome selection), and at Cowboys and Angels on West 4th.

wear:
For the loved one of various ages (newborn to adult), im liking these padraig slippers.

based in North Vancouver, this independently owned and operated company make the perfect slippers for the cold season. they're a must to keep your feet warm indoors! im not sure how they'll stand up to the outdoors though if you live anywhere outside of west coast Canada as we have quite mild winters! nice array of colours and sizes, nice leather soles therefore no static against carpet! check out their store finder!

read:
I love Dr. Seuss' Oh the Place's You'll Go!

There are some books that can just be described as beautiful from cover to back. Not just illustrations, but the message. This book is one of them! I can tolerate only so much Dr. Seuss after reading it over and over again ('the sun did not shine, it was too wet to play...') but this book i can read on and on and on. i think this book is even appropriate for some young adults in your life! Everyone should have a copy in their library.

Holiday Gift Giving 2012! (Under 5 version)

I am so in the holiday mood! especially now that our local radio station is playing 24/7 Christmas music...thank you 103.5 QM/FM!

Last year, i blogged my first ever holiday gift guide, inspired by Mama in the City. Round 2 for 2012, and my baby is here! 2012 being baby's first Christmas, I cant help but feel super excited for what is in store for us this holiday season as a family of 3!

during my recent black friday shopping escapades, i came across plenty of wonderful toys. it's funny how before i had Max i never cared noticed all these toy stores, but post baby i see them around everywhere as if i had radar (this is also true for baby bumps)! if you need help finding that special gift, here are my favorite toys for the wee ones under 5:

most cost effective:

I saw this 5 in 1 activity cube at Costco for $50. $10/toy, space saver, no clean up., no apparent choking hazard, condo living friendly...i think that's WIN WIN! Max has something like this, but the 'busy zoo' version (thanks Mrs. D!). He's a little young right now, so he's using it as an anchor to hoist himself up...but every few weeks or so he's actually discovering the purpose of each little side and learning how to play with it. Great colors, no sharp corners, fun little activities, many learning and play opportunities, this is a fabulous toy!

for the budding musicians:

i love this set of sound and rhythm instruments from Melissa and Doug toy company. it was one of the first things that caught my eye as i entered Cowboys and Angels on W.4th. the seahorse is a rattle, you clack the clams, the octopus is a little tambourine, and i think the crab is another type of rattle. i dont know about you but sea life is always something i gravitate towards when checking out toys. they're always so cute!

For the 2+ toddlers, I love this little JANOD Confetti Piano i saw at Hip Baby , also on West 4th.

It has 18 keys, uber cute, and the keys sound like something off of 'Dance of the sugar plum fairy.' Not annoying at all, right? Nice start for the little Mozart or little Bon Jovi in the making! if money is no object, it's priced at a whopping $100- just think, 'hey it's cheaper than a real piano!'

Watch this guy play some tunes

if you can find it, Melissa and Doug also have their own version. it's a bit cheaper and the colors are different. I've had no luck locating this in the Vancouver area!

for the ones about to mobilize:

i saw this JANOD walker at Hip Baby (again on west 4th).

xylophone, walker, beads, rubber things around wheels for speed control, space saver, no scattered play things...yet another apartment friendly toy! lovely! but if you cant afford the $119 price tag, here is an equally beautiful alternative....

nearly identical right? this green beauty by IMAGINARIUM sells for $40 at toys r us CANADA, and toys r us USA for $30 (both online only). Snap it up!

for the walkers and talkers:

i simply just love the SKIP HOP back packs and lunch bag sets. particularly the owl, monkey or penguin! i cannot make up my mind!

they just scream bright, cute, child, and happy happy joy joy! i can totally picture picnics with the lunch bag and Max carrying his little do-dads in his pack! locally, ive seen these at Granville island, TjsKids, Raspberry Kids and Crocodile.

just simply adorable:

Last but not least, this SKIPPER Roller Ride on Toy is just so freakin adorable! The body part is a soft foam that's easy on the little bums. Kids just ride on it and scoot around the house- recommended for dwellings with wood floors as the wheels are like office chair wheels (rolling on carpet would be hard). They come in a few designs such as a race car, cow, lady bug, and bee. I saw this at Raspberry Kids (online) and Hip Baby on W. 4th.

happy shopping!

Addendum: the boy is walking!

ok so i left him alone for a split second, he heads for the walker. i turn around and he's pushing the walker by himself and walking! even regulating speed at which to push based on floor surface. no face plants! i managed to capture this a few minutes later...

please slow down, you are growing up too fast!!

Kangapouch

i don't fully know whether to credit milestone or product in this blog post, but honestly, im more inclined to credit product in the downright improvement of Max's sleep hours! Let me introduce to you the kangapouch.

  • 100 % cotton
  • white goose/duck down fill
  • 2 way zipper (easy diaper change)
  • machine washable and tumble dry
  • adjustable for growth
  • ive only seet it at Crocodile Baby

Back when i received the super baby haul from my friend Sarah, I had no idea what sleep sacs were or what they were used for (i would grade my product knowledge as a D back then).  I thought babies slept in their sleepers and that was that. who knew that babies needed something to keep them warm like adults (duh, me)!  One of Sarah's purge was this giant white puffy thing that was clearly too large for a baby, and so large that i couldn't picture this baby (then inside me) fitting into this big comforter with straps until many many Many month's or years later, and thus, it was tucked away in a dresser not to be seen again until the first week of October 2012.

Yes it is Now. it is cold, and it has been cold at the wee hours of the night since September ended. I already was using a semi thick cotton sleep sac at night- Max would be sleeping his regular schedule with about 2 wakings for feed at night- tolerable, bearable, manageable, we were doing well. I whipped out the sleep sac particularly because there is a window insulation issue in Max's room (problem from the exterior). when i walked into a feed in the middle of the night, i was cold and i assumed poor baby was probably cold too (i frown at the thought). it was time for change.

Anyhow, since October 1st, the first night I used the Kangapouch, Max's sleep pattern's have made a sharp turn towards amazing! Prior to kangapouch use, For his first nap, his bare minimum was 45 minutes, now they're minimum 60 minutes, on average 90 minutes, and sometimes even 2 hours! (his 2nd and 3rd naps vary though because we're usually out and about). Furthermore, for his night sleep, he went from first waking at the 4 hour mark twice a night, to now waking on average on or after 5 hours. We then have a quick 2-3 minute night feed, and he's back down to sleep for another few hours until he gets squirmy in the tail end of his sleep time and needs a soother to give me that extra hour.

Seriously, this can't be milestone alone! it's no surprise that im loving this Kangapouch (thank you Sarah!) and Max is loving it too as he's getting prolonged rest. at night, all Max wears is a sleeper and then he has this on, i admit i do still wonder if he's comfortable as his head and arms aren't covered in the sleep sac and the room is still cold. i'm not sure how much the temperature will drop during the winter, if i'll need to supplement with room heat, but right now whenever i unzip him in the morning, he's emitting warmth and he feels so toasty and so squeezable!

**i realize i should have some pics of Max in the kangapouch, however I'm just not so inclined using flash in the darkened room and risk waking the little man up!

** also, i realize i just posted about a sleep regression. Our sleep issue is getting him to sleep, once he does, it's pretty goodl

Stuff that Got Me Through the Month!

Essentials this Last summer month!

1) the food making journey: a mini chopper and an ice cube tray. I especially liked this ice cube tray by OXO tot as the tray only needed to be slightly cracked to get the cubes loosened and out. The lid wasnt necessary but nice to have

2) for the endless amounts of time we spent at the pool and beach, the beach tent (Coleman) and sunscreen (Badger).

3) for the long walks and when he needed a position change after sweating, a stroller and a carrier. this was essential when we went to the PNE as it was hot, Max was sweating, and way too heavy to carry in my arms everywhere

4) all day activities (really for the most part, it was lounging around) that were cheap and fun
New Brighton Park
Grandview Park
Trout Lake
English Bay

5) Sophie the Giraffe. it keeps on giving to this very day!
