We started SOLIDS!

i started solids with Mikkel sometime during month 6 and so far, she's not loving it! I don't really remember how it was like with Max or what I fed him but with #2, I'm not going to freak about it because eventually she'll eat. Before I know it, i'll be grumbling about the kids not eating an adequate amount of dinner but ask for a snack one after another, after another, for the rest of the night every.15.minutes- like Max does now! I know i'm not alone here!

Currently, i'm making all of Mikkel's food because it's more cost effective, easy, and actually really fun to do.  She's also been eating bits and pieces of our dinner- especially nice if we have left overs because I just chop it up and freeze it for her in the cubes. if the dinner is extra saucy, I wash the sauce off or save some plain veggies for her on the side before it goes in the actual meal. I contemplated on baby led weaning but since I do everything around here, I didn't want to add cleaning up the floor to my repertoire. Besides, I feel like I'm bonding with her every time she opens up her mouth for a bite...it's just so small and cute! love this girl!

my current faves:

  1. OXO Ice Cube Tray When I first started making food, I wanted to buy at least 2 of these ice trays because I was planning to go all Julia Child with the baby food making. Thankfully, I talked myself out of it and bought only 1 as i realized you can only introduce so much to the baby at a time anyways, and food freezes pretty fast. I like these ice cube trays because the food is covered as it freezes and doesn't get freezer burned (in my opinion). Also, so easy to take the food out with a slight running of water at the back, no major cracking of the tray needed to release the blocks.
  2. Vegetable Steamer. I got a silicone vegetable steamer so my pans won't be scratched up and because the metal one I had rusted. as with the concept of all steamer, it preserves the nutrients better than boiling and throwing all the vitamins down the drain.
  3. Hand Blender. First it's versatile- from DIY soups to pureed baby food! You can choose your colour, does the job, easy to clean.

  1. OXO baby spoons. These are my favourite baby spoons because of its ergonomic design. My hand doesn't feel awkward or cramp up when I feed her, and the spoon fits perfect in her mouth. I'm also a sucker for someone who can choose a colour! I wish though that these, in their set of two, came with an on the go case. I think the singles do though, but as kids drop spoons so often, nice to have a backup in lunch bag.
  2. Fisher Price Deluxe Quick Clean Portable Booster. Apartment size, grows with her (high chair to booster), space saver, easy to clean, portable, and was on sale at the right now. Can't ask for more, it was meant to be.
  3. Bib with a food catcher. i'm not particular to any brand, as long as it has a catcher/tray it's good. The most logical invention in the baby product world!

  1. SKIP HOP lunch bag. Litterless lunch, super cute, insulated, currently holds some food basics for two kids. again, i'm a sucker for when you can choose a colour or animal or design etc. We've had ours since Max was born!
  2. First Years Take and Toss Straw Cup. once baby is slightly older, maybe 10+ months, these are the best cups. Easy to clean (trust me, all the others grow MOULD), well priced, and you can have 1 for water, 1 for smoothies, 1 for dairy, 1 for whatever. We still use a cup in the bedroom for Max in case he is thirsty overnight, if he spills it...no shattered glass!
  3. Glasslock Tempered Glass Containers. My mom bought a whole bunch from Costco, came with a size perfect for the amount a baby, a toddler, a grownup would eat...plus more for random leftover storage of daily meal life. Even though they're not the lightest packaging of baby food you can buy, at least you can reheat glass, no staining, no leeching of chemicals into baby's system. check Costco!
So excited for this milestone in Mikkel's life!

French Kids Eat Everything?!

You've probably heard of this book called, French Kids Eat Everything.
Karen LeBillion shares 10 rules that she learned from the French on how to raise happy, healthy eaters.

Although Max is eating plenty, sometimes i feel like im feeding him the same exact thing- or at least same exact ingredients daily because they're reliable aka he will eat them without fuss.
am i exposing him enough to enough variety?
if he doesnt like his meal and doesnt eat, do i wait until he does eat it (which could be hours) or prepare what he likes as backup so he gets SOMETHING to eat?
will the above cause him to become a picky eater and not try new foods because he knows mama will not let him starve and give in to what Max really wants?
maybe this is a developmental thing and we should just go with the flow?

Stuff like that floats around in my head y'know just because i can't stand picky eaters, and hell no do i want to raise one. In my childhood, we ate what was on our plate and finish it or id get the "you're lucky you have something to eat, there are kids around the world who have nothing to eat" guilt trip. Honestly it worked, i love food. Though i have my share of likes and dislikes (ie. bittermelon), im willing to try new things, but i hate that guilt trip tactic and dont want to follow the same suit in my household.

Here are a few rules that resonate for me:

1. Parent's schedule meals and menus
im still on the fence about this because im not going to let Max go hungry if he's not wanting to eat the meal we have cooked. im good with giving him bits and pieces of the foods we have prepared and something he would normally enjoy. at least i know he will eat and have tried something new. Definitely still a work in progress.

2. Eat family meals together
in an ideal world this would be awesome, but as a shift worker this isnt always possible, but we try. i do notice that Max eats the most when he uses his utensils and eats something that resembles what we are eating..thank goodness for multiple days off! with this rule, we have made dinner being the meal we put the most effort in eating together as a family.

3. Eat your veggies
eat veggies as a first meal? that's a cool idea. Max is all about peas, carrots, and corn right now- as in the frozen variety, so im not complaining too much as veg is veg. when he's older, perhaps we can introduce the salad. kids are definitely the hungriest at the start of each meal and of course will eat more of what is in front of them.

4. you don't have to like it but you do have to taste it
im totally feeling this rule. funny though that we have no problem convincing him to try ice cream and sweets, y'know the good stuff ...but a cauliflower? another story

5. No snacking
love this and have been applying it to Max since solids was initially upgraded from the basic pureed stage. he's definitely not one of those kids who can snack all day and still be eating full meals, he needs to be hungry to be more adventurous

6. eating is joyful
i read this mom's story where she waited for 3 hours for her toddler to finish his meal. like CIO Eating instead of CIO sleeping. super sad and totally not something i would ever do. eating is messy fun, we joke at the table, we have fun plates and utensils, we socialize.  whatever it takes to create the positive environment right?

^^ is that a raised pinky i see as he eats his watermelon?!! ^^

^^ pizza wheel, watermelon, and whole milk! clearly a winner ^^

oh the joys of parenting!

Little One Update

Little Max turned a whole f-o-u-r-t-e-e-n months on the 19th! I can't believe it myself, seriously wasn't i just pregnant? from my popular posts widget, my "37 weeks" story seems to get frequent traffic- a fun reminder at how time is flying right before my eyes.

yummy...flyers...

What's Max like these days you ask? Well he's a fun fun fun little boy who's personality is blooming each day. I think he's going to be quite the athlete judging from his super strength such as moving heavy furniture around the house, ability to independently hoist himself up on our couch that's about chest in height to him (as well as the twin bed in his room) and know how to get himself back down on the ground feet first. Instead of dragging toys around the house, he often chooses to pick things up (sometimes over his head) and carry the item(s) with one arm, and bring it to us - so so funny when you can see from his face how much he's struggling but he is just so determined to carry it!

I love how he knows his way from our parking stall, to the elevators, then up to our floor, out of the elevators and which way to turn to go home. This walking (sometimes nearly running) skill is a huge help when we're carrying up groceries and he can carry a small thing or so while i can help husband with the rest of the load. i love how he assists in putting his clothes on and off. if certain clothes are put on, it means we are following up with a predictable activity and he actually gets excited! Max appears to know what words mean when we say it in english and in tagalog- I'm thinking he's still babbling for the majority of the time but i won't be surprised if he just whips out a sentence one day when no other witnesses are around to hear it but me!

size 12-18months shirt and pants, size 6 feet

the little man already has his own music tastes and dance moves! he can moon walk and shuffle- but we see it as walking backwards and sideways. if he is particularly feeling the groove he stomps his feet on the ground and flaps his right arm like something that came out of the chicken dance. at anytime anywhere even while on the carrier, if he's feeling the music or likes the song being sung, he'll do an arm move somewhere between the chicken flap-a conductors arm waves-and raising the roof. he's got quite the eclectic taste!

at school, there are girls who already come up and try to kiss him (and have kissed him) or hold him. ive seen him back away independently but ive also seen him go for girls by means of pointing his finger close to their face and inch closer and closer until i intervene (and then he laughs). he likes girls with long hair (maybe because i have long hair?) and he'll go up to them stare, smile, giggle and attempt to play with their tresses. seriously, i cant resist him...i can't imagine what he'll be like when he is older!

scrambled or over easy?

Max has become a pretty good eater who knows what he likes, what doesnt taste good, and what he wants all the time if given the opportunity. He's feeding himself and doesnt often let me feed him anymore. he appears to love using his utensils though still needing some help in the piercing with a fork department. Fries or potato wedges seem to be our go-to treat, he loves these things whether baked or fried. i always judged moms before i became a mom when i would see their babies/kids eating fries but now, this is our bribe at restaurants when he just needs to be cooperative so we can eat hot food...it always works! What kid doesnt love french fries right?

As for sleep, he still sleeps in my arms for his first nap when i'm off work (Gene and him have his own technique). For his afternoon nap, i finally clued into using the carrier during this time and he often has naps while im on the go zigzagging around Vancouver trying to get retail therapy errands done. i purposely schedule my 'me' activities during this time as the movement of us lulls him to long naps while receiving the benefits of babywearing and mamma gets to chill out doing pre-baby activities (minus the ability to try on clothing). As for nights, not sure what's up lately but Max has been needing to co-sleep. Some brief CIO sessions once put down in bed, then he goes to sleep only to wake up 2-8 hours later crying and this is my signal to get up and sleep with him. sometimes i can stretch out our wakeup time from 6am to nearly 715am! I quite enjoy the cosleeping when i'm off, but brutal when i have work the next day as he doesnt sleep like a log but more like  a tazmanian devil with his need to always reposition and basically do a 360 revolution each night.. Thanks for the head butt! Thanks for placing your bum in front of my face! thanks for dropping your body weight on me! hahaha...always so cute though! he will never be so small again right? cherishing it!

this is his most entertaining skill

how can i say no to this face? xoxox

Review of My 10 Most Used Meal Products

Besides lots of smiles, words of encouragement, spoonfuls of food pretending to be airplanes, and sound effects galore, what else has made our food journey fun? Meal time products of course! Here are my opinions of my most frequently used products:

YES: First and foremost, the bag is adorable, I am personally content just looking at the bag! The lining keeps food cool or warm depending on how it was recently prepared. The zip is strong -enough that you stuff this bag with 'tall' foods like an apple and still be able to zip with ease. The cavity is deep and holds enough grub for a kid sized appetite. The bag is nicely compact and can easily be stuffed in my stroller undercarriage without taking up too much room, or even hang from the 'mommy hook' without being too cumbersome.
NO: What im not loving about this bag though is that the placement of foods isn't oriented vertically but instead, horizontally. I had to buy leak proof glassware in case Max's food involved soups/liquids as when placed in the lunch bag, the food is lying down. To tote, the bag has to be upright and the food is then tilted on its side just asking for a leaking mess! I highly recommend purchasing leak resistant  containers, or better yet, pack a sandwich!

  • Silver Curved Spoon

I have two sets of spoons that i've been feeding Max with, standard baby spoons and this curved silver spoon.
YES: At first I wasn't fond of the design of this silver spoon because I just wasnt seeing it as very ergonomic compared to the standard long handled utensil, but as Max got bigger (and mouth and appetite got bigger), this curved spoon has become the perfect shovel for the near bottomless pit. My index and middle finger and thumb work in unison to allow me to feed Max with ease. I can scoop plenty of food, no inkling of cramping or awkwardness in the hand, the spoon is light, it's very ergonomic and fitting for my feeding style and positions sometimes necessary to do so.  I like that i can feed with my left and right hand, and both techniques are comfortable with this spoon style. The spoon is compact in size, the scoop is akin to a teaspoon in quantity and not at all too big for Max's baby mouth. this will be a nice heirloom and the silver will last the test of time. My favourite baby feeding utensil!
NO: what i dont like about this spoon is merely personal preference- it oxidizes (naturally). so if you want a shiny utensil you have to use silvo to wipe of the black. when it comes to Max's health vs. a shiny spoon, Max wins.

This OXO tot plate has been perfect for the little man who is now feeding himself more efficiently.
YES: It's a nice size that fits plenty of food. I like that it's not divided because grownup plates aren't divided and Max should learn from the beginning that the world won't end if different foods touch each other! Although not slip proof, it has a slip resistant weighted bottom which makes life easier for Max when he's trying to pick up food or even use a spoon, and the plate isn't moving around all over the tray. It's sturdy- it at least provides some obstacle (albeit minimal) when the little one feels like using this as a frisbee instead of a plate (which he surprisingly has not as the shape doesnt have any overhangs for picking up)! What i love most about it is the removable green ring that acts as a lip- it actually helps Max keep the food on his plate. The concave angle pushes the food back onto the spoon and when using his hands, aids Max in keeping the food on his fingers instead of the high chair tray (80% kept on plate, 20% on tray). Easy to clean, no BPA, dishwasher safe, microwaveable, and bonus marks for being attractive!

This Mally Bib has been with Max since our food journey started
YES: It's the ultimate in practicality as food + baby = messy, and nothing beats just easily washing a bib with soap and water, let air dry, and use again for the next meal. The bib is made of leather and has a strong magnetic snap behind the neck that can easily be pulled off by a parent but not so easy for a child (been there!). Furthermore, the magnetic snap is great for sticking on the fridge when done with- no more looking around for another bib! it is easily foldable and thus yet another item we tote around in Max's lunchbag. The bib comes in two sizes, one for babies and another for toddlers. at 1 year old of average weight and height, his baby sized bib still has plenty of room before I need to move up to the next level. Bonus points for the bib being reversible! the other side of THIS particular design is a beige and light brown combination with a pocket that probably serves the purpose of catching foods that don't make it into the mouth.
NO: What i dont like about it being leather is that it is starting to smell like an old dish cloth. Have i washed it too many times? Does it need a good roast under the sun to burn the smell off? Fortunately, the smell isnt overpowering enough to affect Max's appetite. nevertheless, ive been using the reverse side with pocket just to deter potential appetite busters. Also, im not loving the retail price for this bib, approximately $37! I guess if you count the number of bibs you need to buy and launder, plus the energy costs it takes to launder, this justifies the price...but i still say OUCH!
*Bought it on ebay

I used to carry Max's dry snacks in a ziploc bag, but the crunchies created holes in the ziploc bags from our wear and tear and thus needed to be replaced almost weekly (not very ecofriendly i know). This reusable snack cup has been our contribution to the environment for toting around dry snacks.
YES: it is small in size, holds enough food for a toddler's appetite, fits perfectly in little hands, the opening is perfect for little hands to pull food out, and thus yet another item always carried in Max's lunch bag. The sides have a grip-rubbery texture to it (similar to the base of the OXO plate) so when Max is running around, it isn't flying off of his hands. I love that the open/close lid is not only a learning opportunity, but is attached (and removeable if need be) so i dont need to go looking for lost lids in my kitchen or wherever it was dropped in public spaces. Currently, Max is still in the process of learning how to open the lid, but is quite content with it closed as he uses it as a rattle until he notices what's making the sound- and then he wants it opened. This 'rattle' also has its downside though as Max doesnt yet know that a closed lid will keep contents inside, so i'll let you figure out what happens next (supervise your kids)!
NO: The lid is not air tight. Though great for little learners as it won't snap on fingers, it also does not keep whatever is inside fresh for more than 24 hours. i'm in the habit of clearing Max's lunch bag every night and if there's crunchies left inside the snack cup, i just put the entire cup in a ziploc bag and take it out again for the next meal. Yes it's another ziploc bag, but it gets near infinite use. if dropped (read thrown) on the ground, the lid will not always stay closed, potential mess. What I wish this snack cup had was a ring so i can attach it to the stroller or shopping cart with stroller links and Max can feed himself. But with such a wide opening, i think it's best that a parent hold it anyways to prevent big spills!
*Given to me by Happy Baby Daily Needs

I've been using this snack cup for the stroller as evidenced by the attached stroller rings. It took a couple of days for Max to figure out to put his hand in and then out, but now all is well.
YES: I like the fact that if Max needs an extra snack, i just empty out the snack disk or snack cup in this and let him feed himself while on the stroller or even while sitting on a shopping cart! Anything that promotes hands-free parenting and kids-learning-for-themselves, is a must try in my book! The lid snaps on easily and i've had no problem with it falling off when Max is using this as yet another rattle. The lid wings are spill resistant (not spill proof)- yes, even some mild shaking will result in some fallen Nutrios, but not as much as if it were a wide open mouth.
NO: Of course, as the lid has slits, it will not keep crunchies fresh, so it is best to empty out into an air tight container at the end of the day or they'll get very stale by the morning. I'm not sure if it's the lid design or just the way Max grabs food but when he pulls food out, it's like extra crunchies pop out from the cup or from the pile he grabbed. Either a technique thing on his part or that the flexible rings are just a little tough to pull his hand through easily. Learning process.
*bought at Superstore

Setting the breast aside, Max's second form of acquiring liquids has been this ZOLI bot cup. It took about a week for him to figure out how to use it but afterwards, he's been loving this cup!
YES: The two 'arms' of the cup allows for Max to hold onto this cup on his own easily and shake it around like a rattle with ease. The lid has an attached cover for the straw when not in use- just slide on/slide off, nothing is lost after a washing, and the straw isn't contaminated when not in use. There is a valve system with the straw so that if turned on its side, liquid is not pouring out. The valve is also weighted and moves around based on Max's orientation, so wherever the liquid is located Max is able to get a drink. Honestly, I think there's something about the straw that has him preferring this cup over other straw cups. He just rejects 98% of straw cups unless the straw is as thin and as soft/flexible (read durable teething toy).
NO: What I don't like about this cup though is that it is pricey! Also, i think it's imperative to buy the ZOLI replacement/cleaning kit (more expenses) as that pipe cleaner/cleaning brush is needed to clean inside the straw. Max only drinks water from this cup but i see black particles (God forbid it's related to mold) inside the straw so i have to clean it weekly. Is it mold? Is it dirt? I dont know what it is but it's cleaned/brushed through under running water until visibly clean. i've also noticed a few times that whenever i have flicked open the lid, i get sprayed with water. again, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt, but im just glad it's water for now.
*i bought this at Lussobaby

I bought this to store Max's food as it claims to have a 'no-leak lid.'
YES: Well my friends, it hasn't leaked liquids even when toted around in Max's aforementioned lunch bag! Microwave and dishwasher safe, no stains or smells, moderately heavy but as expected for glassware. I like that for cleaning, it's easy to separate the lid from the rubber ring that keeps it a 'no-leak' product. It's also nice to have that vent on the lid for microwaving so if your food splatters, it's not all over inside the microwave. i tend to just remove the lid altogether and cover the food with a paper towel so im not microwaving plastic, personal preference.
NO: What I am not loving is that whenever i open the lid the ring partially separates from the lid. Not sure why. Not a huge deal for dry food but when packing wet food there's just a bit of a mess all over the lid that needs to be scraped off from the two parts.
*bought this at Walmart

This snack disk has been a useful snack reservoir for my snacks, but has also been used for Max's crunchies.
YES: i love that the lid is air tight and keeps our food fresh! its been real handy lately to have some extra snacks as Max's meals just seem to go right through him (it's nice to have options for him too). carrying extra snacks has also become a bit of a gimmick we use to keep him busy and still in the high chair at restaurants so we can eat in peace! It's compact, has a slip resistant bottom for when Max eats out of it, and the spaceship like shape to it is designed to aid in containment in case of a spill (again, spill resistant not spill proof)! bonus points for lid staying in place whenever this has been thrown/dropped/slipped onto the floor! for my personal use, it's been handy to carry snacks from the bulk section. i think it carries up to about a cup/250mls worth of food. i dont always find it necessary to snack, but great for relieving transit related nausea. i used to keep my purse snacks in a ziploc bag or  tupperware but this is so much better in appearance, durability, and size. easy to clean inside and outside. dishwasher safe, no BPA.
NO: With the diameter of this snack disk being fairly wide, it doesn't really fit into Max's lunch bag along with everything else i want to take so this is kept in my purse or backpack as a just-in-case source.  also, i wish this product had a ring so i can attach it to a bar and give Max the opportunity to feed himself. the lid is also separate and not attached, it has the potential to be lost.
*given to me by Happy Baby Daily Needs

I use this straw cup for Max's non-water beverages, which at his age is really just whole milk. It's appropriate for ages 18 months+ hence the general large size of the container. This is the ONLY straw cup next to his Zoli that Max will use!
YES: the only 2 things i love about this cup is that it is super easy to take apart and clean- even the straw connection. I have not noticed any residue in the straw like i have with the Zoli cup, probably because soap can flow through the straw when washed!
NO: What i don't like about this cup is that there are no arms for Max to hold onto it more effectively. There also is no valve at the end of the straw so sometimes if i'm not paying attention, Max is trying to drink but no fluids are coming up until i tilt or turn the cup in a functional angle/position. There is also a crappy  transparent lid that comes with this cup, it turns clockwise/counter clockwise to tuck in the straw when not in use, it isnt attached so losing it is possibility. After Max drinks from this and has milk still in the tubing, if he shakes this cup- milk is flying, if left unattended on the ground after he drops it- milk is leaking on the ground from the straw opening (no valve), and if i turn the 'lid' to hide the straw, milk will be leaking from the cup (i dont know why). Most annoying of all, sometimes milk is just erupting out of the straw as if a ghost was sucking on it (yes, while upright and untouched) it creates such a mess and wastes expensive milk! Finally, Max loves chewing on the straw every now and then, and there are no replacement kits. I'd have to buy a new cup once the straw has broken down.

Despite these issues, i'd still buy this because it's so easy to clean, especially once Max's beverage choices has expanded

Food Journey 6 months In!

Max and I's food journey has been a roller coaster (naturally) since the day we started. As with anything else in life, it can be better (ie. he eats something new every single day) but it also certainly can be worse (ie. not eating at all and health is affected by it).  i'm happy, Max is happy, Max is eating and thriving (22lbs 9oz and 74cm), what more can one ask for?

October 2012, he loved these nutrios so much we were going through a box in less than 4 weeks

I followed the path of least resistance and went for the 'best of all worlds' practice from the very early stages - some purees, some lumpy, and some in their natural form. Today, Max continues to be on this path as evidenced by my fridge (fresh) and freezer (frozen) stash of foods. My no-big-deal issues these last few months were:

  • Max was more than willing to try new foods, but wont eat an entire meal of this new food (exclusively at dinner). i always have to have his favourite meal (tomato sauce pasta) ready after he's done with the new flavours. it was easier during the day as Max would get fruits and crunchies which he welcomes with open arms
  • the best time to get him to love a food was to feed it at his hungriest time- breakfast. reject last night's dinner? Surprise! you're eating it for breakfast!
  • Max prefers to try new flavors when i feed him sitting on my lap. he wont eat as much if he tries new foods on his highchair. once it's establlished he likes the food, then he's ok to go back to the high chair
  • he wont always eat on the highchair, sometimes i let him play around and he comes back to me like a yoyo when he wants another bite. other times i go to him.
  • the introduction of certain foods and when. the current literature states that there's no need to delay certain foods in fear of the baby developing a reaction from the early introduction, but it just seemed more logical to me to be patient and wait instead of rushing to feed everything i possibly can (when he really has his whole life to eat) and then developing a sensitivity or reaction, and it in turn has affected his ability to eat everything he possibly can. we are both pretty cool with staying patient
I wasnt really consistent with the latter idea, i just listened to my gut feeling
- wheat --> early
- citrus --> early
- baked goods with egg whites --> early
- whole milk --> early
- egg whites or entire eggs --> waiting
- strawberries --> waiting
- peanuts and shellfish --> waiting

January 2013, wouldnt it be nice if he fed himself with the spoon? He seems interested in learning!

Max's currently favorite foods include blueberries, mangoes, bananas, macaroni and cheese, open faced broiled cheese toasts, toast in general, white spot french fries, mum mums, nutrios, anything from the Baby Gourmet squeezable pouches, beef stew and my spaghetti sauce. It seems like quite the variety, but really it's not as at times he seems to have the same thing every other day and sometimes everyday.

Im looking forward to our food journey future as after Max turns 1, more flavors can be added to the menu. Peanut butter and honey sandwiches? Brie and apple sandwiches? Stir fry prawn fried rice seasoned with sesame oil? Pizza with all the trimmings from Sunrise Pizza on the Drive? Yes! i'm already on pinterest pinning all these wonderful looking dishes, now i just need to make them!

Max Has Hit Double Digits! 10 Months Old!

little Max is now 10 months old. I say this every month- where the heck did the time go?

What's a 10 month old Max like these days?

  • he says 'mama mama' all the time in long run on sentences, sometimes we get a 'dada dada'
  • he's playing with various volumes of his voice
  • he's loves sharing/offering his nutrios and pacifier
  • sleeping straight from 8pm-7am with only rare wakeups (no night feeds!), ravenous in the morning as expected!
  • naps 2 times a day (sometimes 3), in my arms, for about 1.5hrs each time - this is prime time to get up to date with everything happening in the social network
  • a really sweaty sleeper when sleeping in my arms, his hair is soaked when he wakes up
  • learning to point at things he wants or at people he wants attention from
  • offering hand still, but not as often (same gesture)
  • can walk by himself using the walker! (watch the video)

  • really good appetite, with breakfast being the best. still feeding on lumpy/pureed but good at feeding self whole apples, cheese, nutrios, peas, and carrots
  • loves nutrios, rice rusks, cottage cheese, and all apples (i think he would eat these for breakfast lunch and dinner if he had a choice)
  • puts arms up when he wants to be picked up. if already up in someones arms, he stretches arms out towards another person he wants to be carried by
  • he can crawl while holding onto something with one of his hands
  • wants to climb over everything to get through (instead of crawling around the object like, ie. ME!)
  • loves giving open mouth wet kisses. i just need to lean forward close to him and his mouth is open to give a wet kiss
  • breastfeeding 4x a day

  • 4 teeth (2 up, 2 bottom)
  • 3-4 poops a day
  • still loves and whines for his pacifier
  • he really likes watching mike the knight - i think it has something to do with how big the characters are on tv
  • he loves the IOGO yogourt commercials! we were playing in the kitchen, he hears the first 4 notes of the commercial, he pauses and then bolts out of the kitchen to watch the commercial. one of those wave-your-hand-in-front-of-their-face-and-no-blinking moments. again, probably has to do with how simple and big the images are
  • attaached to me big time (aka major separation anxiety). i cant leave room without him crying, or him looking/finding me. i cant be in the kitchen without him wanting to be carried by me and will escalate to crying if i dont pay attention to him or move around too much

everything goes in his mouth

Food Time!

Since about the 20th of July, i've been on the eating bandwagon. I've got all this baby food making 'stuff', my fellow online January momma's group are doing it, a mom and baby group at the Lee CHC was doing a solids talk- it was all a sign to start I tell you!

Our initial food was barley cereal which i made into a light puree (well, i added water to a desired consistency).  as expected, he wasn't too happy about this texture in his mouth. He never really spat it out, but he just had a look of disgust on his face and kind of let the food fall from his mouth hahaa

end of first week of barley cereal

I've also been reading a lot about how food is not only about learning how to eat but is also about learning social skills. Because of the open concept layout of our living/dining, prior to Max, husband and I would just eat wherever (bad habit), but now I'm making a conscious effort to eat as a family at the table. If not for all meals, then at least dinner. Thanks to my friend Sarah who gave me her space saver high chair, Max has now joined us at the table! He gets his own dish and spoon to play with and get used to, but seeing as how I'm a bit of a neat freak (not necessarily clean freak) and witnessing how he throws the spoon and plate around (yikes), I haven't put food on his plate yet to help him help himself.

max with dish and spoon, not too happy!

if there was food on that plate, id be freaking (internally)

I was getting really worried until YESTERDAY because Max totally was hating the high chair. I really didn't want negative associations with eating because of this high chair so thank the Lawd that I saw Sarah yesterday who suggested that I tilt the chair. the result? AMAZING! no freak outs (knock on wood) within a few minutes of being on the chair.

As of late, Max has tried the barley cereal, bananas, and avocado. I wanted to use my 'stuff' so i made a small batch of green beans, carrots, and sweet potato of various textures and which are in the freezer as we speak.

As for feeding practices, i use the mush texture for the barley cereal as i have no other choice really. I cut up bananas and avocados in small chunks and feed it to him via spoon, but on other days i've also mashed up bananas and mashed up avocados (not together), put it on his spoon and let him feed himself. The common denominator is that spoon! When i can get my head around on the concept of the inevitable mess (yes, giving him his own spoon with puree on it is about all the mess i can handle right now), we'll try the baby led feeding technique where he feeds himself. No pincer grasp here just yet though.

Im trying all sorts of ways to get food into Max, but i'm not desperate for him to eat as I know breast milk is #1 for him. However, there are days that I'm feeling discouraged that he's not eating enough food and i hate throwing away food (like an avocado that has turned brown as we don't feel like eating it either). i also do have to remind myself to be patient, and that all of this is just for fun right now for him and myself.

Tonight, Max was actually opening his mouth for his cereal and banana mix! Wow, I know! He also likes it when i make airplane noises and then stop short as his mouth multiple times before going in with the food. He still doesn't LOVE the high chair, and I find I can get more into him when we're both sitting on the ground.

I can't wait for the day he gobbles all this food up and becomes even chunkier!!
