Happy 2nd Birthday!

and so he is 2!!

we spent Max's birthday with our immediate family eating some fantastic filipino cuisine. nothing huge, no theme, just food and family and lots of love for the little one. this last year was a whirlwind for all of us as we literally watched Max transform from a walking baby into a little boy that i could no longer carry on a carrier, who expresses his likes and dislikes, and best of all a loving human being that makes us see that all the trials and tribulations of new parenthood is and was worth it.

at 2, Max wakes up running into the living room to play with his cars and hug moe-moe the cat. he usually drops to his knees and nuzzles his head into moe and then cries, 'moe moe hungry!' his first ever chore is to bring the cat's wet and dry food to their designated spots. he may not do it right away on command but boy does he get upset if you do it for him!

at 2, he's not a huge eater but he'll make room for foods he likes. breakfast usually consists of cheerios or raisin bran…the more raisins the better on both items. a lunch favourite is often grilled cheese and kale sandwich, a full apple, and the smoothie of the day at home. for dinner, as long as there is either rice or fries or a toasty piece of bread, he'll eat the meal. then, more and more fruit before bed. sometimes when he doesn't get enough fruit he'll even throw a tantrum…the little health nut!

at 2, he's shy around certain strangers and very friendly to others, even to the point of touching them at first meeting. he puts a few fingers in his mouth when unsure and eyes start to water when he is really uncomfortable, to which he needs one of us to carry him to ensure his safety and security. if he 's playing with a toy and he sees others without, he looks up to us and states 'share' whether as an inquiry or an offer to the other child. he jumps at the site of my mom, and finally has warmed up genuinely to my dad (the only person with facial hair he approves of!). he loves his mama and papa, always with big smiles attached just saying our names. if either of us were upset, he would literally drop everything he was doing without being asked and offer a kiss and a hug…'mama happy!' he would exclaim.

at 2,  he is obsessed with construction vehicles, namely a 'backhoe,' toy cars that have doors that open, truck toys with sounds, and trains. he loves stacking boxes and knocking them down. he loves balls of all shapes and sizes and has a strong throw reaching distances beyond what i expected. his athletic abilities surprise me for someone of his age, and his interest in dancing really makes me excited for what awaits us in the future!

at 2, Max understands tagalog and english often even expressing himself in taga-lish…but too bad for my husband who is only english speaking! he knows how to count to three…but three must be his fave number as everything is three afterwards! if you sound out big multi-syllable words with him, he's excellent at repeating it back with remarkable enunciation…but only to mama, otherwise he's shy when asked to perform on command.

at 2, he sleeps best when mama or papa is beside him until he falls asleep. he doesn't like sleeping alone   or in hot weather. pacifiers are necessary to get in sleep mode but not always to keep him asleep for the night as i pop them out to measure depth of slumber. 2 hour naps are best, 10 hours at night is the trend. water is often necessary at bedside as thirst wakes him up when the temps are high.

he is 26 lbs, size 2T clothing, 7.5-8 in shoes, and approximately 34.25" tall.
and he is 2!!

Maxiroo is 23 Months!!

Wow my little Maxiroo is 2 years old next month! What the!? Well before i get way too ahead of myself, at this point in time the little one is only 23 months old. Normally i would say, yet again, that this has been my favourite stage, but y'know what? NO it hasn't been. I found this month to be extra extra EXTRA challenging with this guy and i found myself losing my patience one too many times. this is the tip of the iceberg right? the older they get the smarter they are, the more self aware and expressive they become, and by and large i need to just realize that this kid is now his own walking talking entity who knows what he wants and I need to respect that (and so does everyone else).

the most annoying thing EVER this month has been whining and the nonsensical tantrums. normally, i don't mind the whining when there is a communication barrier and he's trying to get a point across, but it really drives me bonkers when he's whining about something, then i try to do something in hopes to figure out what he's talking about…then he gets frustrated, it escalates to crying….then throwing of something…then i raise my voice…and then more tears…and then snap! like a light switch, whatever caused his whining suddenly no longer mattered and Max is his jolly old self as if nothing ever happened.  for example…

Max was eating some cheerios with raisins when i took the bag away and put it on the table in front of him. He did not like that at all so he started to point at the bag and cry. I give the bag back to him, he says "NO, put there" …pointing at the table. So i take the bag, but before i can put it back on the table he starts crying again and pointing at the raisin bag. So i take it again, open it up, show him the raisins. he says again, "NO NO, don't want that." (this happens about 3 more times). By this time my patience is shot, i take the bag and put it on the table and tell him these are the raisins that he was just eating and why is he asking for them if he doesn't want them. like, Kid, i don't know what you want. So, it escalates and now he's trying to stand up on the high chair arching his back, frustrated by the high chair tray so i take the tray and bib off …MISTAKE! that escalated the whole issue to major crying.

This goes on for about 15-20 minutes or so…eventually, i figure out that what he wanted was the entire bag of raisins to be poured on his high chair tray. Not just a little amount, the entire frickin' bag that he didn't even eat much of…he just wanted it all poured in front of him. He was all happy and content once i did this. Ok…yeah…I definitely clogged some arteries trying to figure that out! More or less the same type of i don't know what the hell you want moments this month. i offer him the words, but he's just so wrapped up in pointing and crying that it's not expressed….GRRrrrrr…

On a positive note, the kid is just so smart! and I'm not just saying that because he's my kid…but really, from someone who was never really exposed to kids before my kid was born…this kid is pretty sharp, they're watching EVERYTHING and putting pieces together, and analyzing, and REMEMBERING!
Any new word i say, Max repeats it whether in tagalog or english. his longest sentence right now I think is, "no, don't want it." which is much more tolerable than just an outright 'NO!' We're currently learning our colours, but i think he just likes to say the world "Blue" so everything is blue right now. He's understanding the concept of "same," "two," "share," "sleepy time," "up/down," and so much more that i can't remember.

We experienced our first ever major illness of his life (knock on wood) where he had a case of gastroenteritis from either eating at our local organic big box store or just being on transit and touching things. the first night he had projectile vomiting of his dinner, and then every half an hour for 5 hours or so he would be vomiting either clear or yellow liquid. That was the roughest night ever for us as he would sleep for a few, then wake up and vomit followed by a brief "I'm scared" cry, then go back to sleep for a few minutes to have it all reoccur. He would tell me, "Max choke!" and i would be changing his sheets and pyjamas trying to comfort him…the kid couldn't lie supine for very long without vomitting. terrible terrible night..did I say that already? Anyhow, it was one of those nights where i truly truly cherished co-sleeping with him as i was there to comfort and help him right away. The next few days we were dealing with once a day bouts of MASSIVE liquid stool or multiple movements throughout the day but small in amount or multiple-movements-large-amounts. Yep, basically everything. His appetite has been ok throughout the entire trajectory, but today it's definitely not as good as it was before the illness. In summary, it really takes a certain person to do paediatric nursing…KIDS SHOULD NOT BE SICK.

As for the regular Max 101's:
  • about 26lbs +/- 0.5lbs. Tops are 18-24 months, and bottoms are 18-24 months sometimes 2T but his waist (more of 18-24) is small compared to the length of his legs (more 2T)
  • size 7-7.5 shoes in Nike's …am i the only one who thinks that size 8 is a HUGE leap from 7? i don't know whether to buy him size 7's or 8's for the Spring…would his feet grow that fast?
  • he's got all of his teeth except for the 2nd set of 4 molars
  • i think he'll be right handed
  • he loves balls and cars and kitchen utensils and construction vehicles
  • he loves steering wheels and can't sit in the driver's seat forever pressing all the buttons
  • 1 nap a day 1.5-2 hours, sometimes 3 hours
  • night sleep is usually from 2130-0730. As for any of his sleeps, but particularly the night sleep, we took apart his crib about 2.5 weeks ago so he just sleeps in a twin bed now. our routine is sleeping beside him until he falls asleep, then sneaking out to do whatever we need to do, then instead of waiting for him to cry and summon for us to return…whenever we go to bed, we just go straight for his room and sleep beside him.
  • those dreaded pacifiers are still in our lives! but only for sleep and they're popped out by him or by us once he's in deep sleep. he does wake up in the middle of the night and asks for them again, and sometimes i pop them out again but other times i just want to sleep and forget about them
  • favourite food: apples, grapes, rice, and goldfish
  • thanks to my husband, he's been exposed to the TV much more than id like. so he knows Mike the Knight and Dora, and Caillou …he asks for them every now and then, and definitely recognizes the characters if he saw them in a store
that's my 23 month old!

Just Staying In

Well another one of those days where it was a struggle to get some pants on Max so I gave up on the t-shirt. If there wasn't this cold draft in my apartment, i would have no trouble letting him run around in diapers but i don't want him to catch something. Max is also adamantly refusing the ERGO (OMG!) nowadays so most of our afternoon naps are in house, my back says thank you but my social life has turned upside down because of this new normal. Life and times of a mother, woweee...

^^ hi Moe! want to play? sit? kiss? hug? ^^

The kid really loves our cat Moe. I've had shots like this before, but trust me these moments happen often. Our cat can be quite the handful especially when he's meowing after i've put Max to bed or sneaking into Max's room while he's sleeping. When you put in all that effort to put a kid to sleep and this feline comes in possibly ruining EVERYTHING, sometimes I just want to pull my hair out and scream. Then, I see pics like this and Moe being just so gentle and playful with Max that i should really be thankful that I don't have a crazy, violent, jealous cat especially since Max came after him. Moe is such a gentle, emotional, giant, stealth, boy cat…i should really pay some more attention to him awww..

^^ this is his new facial expression that he learned from who knows where ^^

^^ take a picture of mamma! ^^

Max almost smashed my camera to pieces the other day after I left it on this dresser near my entry way. I thought it was safe; nothing was dangling over the ledge and it was tucked away semi table surface centre. I wasn't paying any attention to it until i heard this grinding sound and saw Max reaching and grabbing the camera by the strap! i saw him drag the camera off the dresser (really, since when did he get so tall?!?!) and it had enough length that if he grabbed it 2 inches less from where he did he would've smashed it to the ground (because he's still short). I nearly had a heart attack! He didn't get in trouble or anything but you better believe i bought him his own camera afterwards. This cute one from Superstore has a bunch of flashing lights, music, and a lens that makes a super cringe worthy grinding sound. He likes the look of mine, but so far more interested in his, phew!

Lots of indoor days lately mainly because i don't feel like struggling to get a 2 year old dressed. The all day Christmas music has been of help to keep us entertained because Christmas music is just plain awesome. Max is also able to entertain himself longer with his current toys and since we banned the iPad about a month ago, he's not wanting me to be around every other minute of the day pressing the replay button on youtube for his favourite videos (wow, how irritating that was!).

Christmas countdown people!

Our Favorite Christmas Music This Year:

"Hey Santa!"

"Mistletoe"

"Miss You Most at Christmas Time"
(i just had to add a tear jerker to the list)

Of course there are so many to choose from,
I pretty much agree with THIS list too. Happy listening!

Before I Became A Mom

Before I became a mom, I wanted an elective c-section

The roots of my vaginal birth aversion came from a nursing school experience. Essentially, I watched a mom during her last minutes of labor and then through delivery of a healthy baby. Basically I had my eyes peeled to her vag from pulsating --> to ring of fire --> to baby out. To other's it was a beautiful moment, to a 20 year old female student with children nowhere in the near forecast, everything about the experience was ghastly. The only thing that turned the tide was discovering I was pregnant, and clarity set in.

Before I became a mom, I was set on exercising every day throughout my pregnancy, eating right, and gaining only the minimum amount of weight (25lbs)

Well I walked a lot. I tried swimming for a couple of weeks and eventually went shopping instead to fulfill my daily cardio requirements. I ate like I always ate, except that Coke tasted ever.so.good that I even bought a case or two or three for the first time in my life. I have to admit that that was officially my pregnancy craving, as today I would drink it more so for the fact that it feels good going down my throat than me loving how it tastes.  I gained 40ish pounds in the end.

Before I became a mom, I thought breastfeeding was easy; like stick the mouth to your nipple easy.

Breastfeeding was initially a struggle because I didn't really understand the concept of feed baby + brain = body makes milk accordingly. I definitely had struggles with engorgement (those "breast rocks" were more uncomfortable than my vag stitches), deciding whether to continue to pump or just exclusively breastfeed (for number 2, im going to do BOTH!), dry cracked nipples that hurt like a biatch with each latch (I LOVE YOU, lanolin), fears of 'nipple confusion' from too much googling. Who knew breastfeeding can go sideways in so many ways?! Max breastfed until 18 months when he decided he wanted to stop, im still kinda bummed about it but also happy that I went that far.

Before I became a mom, I thought my kid would have a short sleep adjustment period but eventually take after me and sleep like a pro ...never even heard of 'sleep training' issues.

I dont know how many times i've written or mentioned sleep on this blog but Max is no pro. At 21 months he still wakes up once a night and we still move in and sleep with him. For naps, he's good with sleeping about 2 hours on average with a soother that pops in and out. Ah well, i've taken this as a no big deal thing now because im totally used to the lack of thorough, uninterrupted sleep and actually enjoy co-sleeping with him. i am wondering though if we have another child how i'm going to repeat this or would I (??) to begin with because what would be the other kid's room has no space for the ever-so-convenient twin bed that allowed for the many interventions to get Max to sleep. hmmm...

Before I became a mom, I thought i'd be a minimalist and have a couple of toys, a few clothes, and the bare minimum in baby gear.

Well we definitely aren't minimalist as we've enjoyed the convenience of 'stuff' that has made first time parenting just a little easier (seriously, is a diaper genie really essential? no. but we have one anyways). Kid's clothes are SO CUTE. I love buying them, but I don't go nuts or spend too much as I have insight on how fast these kids grow. Plus, you get so many clothes as gifts  that you don't even need to buy at times...we've been blessed! As for toys, i'm thankful for the toys Max has been gifted, and also thankful for craigslist.

Before I became a mom, I thought I could hand my kid off to a baby sitter or my parents so I can do things for myself (ie. go to a concert), guilt free.

Aside from work, the longest i've been away from Max to do something for myself was 2-3 hours. I think we were going to a concert? or a dinner with friends? as evidenced by my poor memory, this was a LONG TIME AGO. I do remember looking at my phone of pictures of Max and telling Gene that I missed my baby. I think I even kind of rushed exiting the whole event so I can get back to Max. Today, I still kind of feel this way. if i did need to do something for myself, i have no qualms with leaving Max with Gene...but I dont really like giving him away to my parents so I can do extra curricular activities. he's never slept over at anyone else's house without us, he's either always with both of us or one of us (if i'm working on the weekend though, Gene get's his little break by letting my parents have him for 2-3 hours, but I think he misses him too as it never overlaps into Max's nap time).

Before I became a mom, I thought I had all the time in the world to do what i wanted to do , the kid will just adapt.

Today, activities are scheduled with and or around meal times, nap times, poo times, and bed time in mind. I can still do activities I like to do, but if I can help it, i prefer to stay within our +/- 30-45 minute established schedule for Max's well being. kids thrive off of structure and some predictability right? his quality of life is paramount, and directly affects my quality of life too. he sleeps well, i sleep well..YES!! win-win!!

Before I became a mom, I thought my kid would just go with the flow.

I wanted to get a haircut and I asked my sister to just push Max in the stroller around the mall for 20 minutes or so (he was sleeping anyways). From the second (I mean this literally) I departed, I was told Max woke up and screamed and cried the entire time I was getting a haircut. I could hear a baby cry from the hair dresser's seat and I would see my sister's reflection in the mirror- pacing nervously in front of the entrance checking if I was done the entire time. I think she's still traumatized, hahaha!

Before I became a mom, I thought I was pretty happy.

Then I had my baby. And despite the crying, the sleep deprivation, the tantrums, the unpredictability, the job that is never-ending/24-7/365 days a year, motherhood has brought a whole new meaning to life- it's just so much more meaningful. i've said this so.many.times on this blog, motherhood is the hardest thing i've ever done in my life, but it is also the most fulfilling, rewarding, my greatest accomplishment.

MAXI is 18 months old!

I had an eye opening experience to Max's growth rate the other day when i asked my friend how old her baby was, 6 month's! We're starting solids, she exclaimed. In my head I was seriously like wasn't your baby just born a couple months ago? Much to my surprise, the little girl- born the same month as Max but in 2013, was truly 6 months and Max in turn is 18 months old!

I dont know about you, but this realization truly opened my eyes to the changes that have literally taken place before my eyes since i last checked in (or is it checked out of the every day familiarities) and objectively looked at my child that is not only growing mentally, intellectually, emotionally, but also physically. Today, I saw Max standing beside the diaper genie and he's half a head taller than that thing- last time I paid attention to this, he was the same height as the genie! To boot, Max wanted to jump in his crib so i put him down and the rail is chest height to him...again, last time i paid attention, the rail was chin height! Please stop growing so fast! ;o)

Q + A with Maxwell at 18 months old:

What is your hair and eye colour? light brown hair and hazel eyes

What size of clothing do you wear? at the lower end of 18-24 month sizing in pants and shirts (maybe even 16 months to be more specific). In shoe size 6.5-7. I think I am about 31" tall and 24lbs. #4 Pampers Baby Dry (the #4 Cruisers are too big)

What foods do you like to eat? grapes, mandarin oranges, watermelon, raspberries. water and milk. Goldfish, mum mum's, toast, rice. asparagus. french fries. mac and cheese. (these are the foods mamma doesn't have to hide in the food)

What books do you like to read right now? thisthis, and this

What are your favorite toys? any ball and my Step2 Car. i love my pacifiers (much to the disapproval of my parents!)

How many teeth do you have? 12! still missing 4 canines and 4 back molars

Do you still breastfeed? stopped breastfeeding on July 15 (this was a sad day for mamma- he literally pushed me away and shook his head no. prior to this though he was nibbling at bedtime routine for about 2-3 minutes at most)

How many words can you say? mamma has no idea how many words i can say because it's a 'healthy amount.' i can imitate most words adults say, i can understand english and tagalog words and commands. i usually talk a lot unless im asked to talk in front of people i dont know then im shy!

What time do you sleep and wake up? bed time routine starts at 830pm, down in bed at 9pm. wakes up in the middle of night - mom or dad co sleeps - and we wake up sometime between 730-9am. I nap usually around 2-4pm, and cosleep during this time. if we're out, i need to be woo'd to sleep on the carrier.

What do you do for fun? during the summer, we go to the swimming pool at least 4x a week. we also go to the playground every single day (seriously)!  i love the swings, not a fan of the slide, i like playing with sand if there's a water fountain attached to the pit, and i go up and down large flights of stairs at least 10 times a day!

Biggest change according to mom? within a span of 1-3 days, Max all of a sudden is not loving bath and bedtime routine. Prior to last week, we'd have a 10 minute bath, get in our bed time clothes, sing lullabies, get rid of pacifier easily, hug/dance/rock and in bed within 30 minutes. Now, with the mention of bath time he is instantly crying, he goes into the tub crying and out within 1-2 minutes. Not so happy getting dressed for bed, refusing the breast, not wanting to be cradled like he used to be during lullabies, death grip on the soother and needs it to be literally ripped out of his hands, and hug/dance/rock for at least 10 minutes. hmmm...not sure why the change. No, he's not teething :op

Precious!

^^ Max and I being silly with the frog effects! ^^

all in all, im feeling pretty sentimental about all this as Max will soon be turning 2. when people ask how old your kid is, you're not like - or at least im not going to be like he's 29 months! He's 2! and then 3! Then 4! Then school..and then the little boy becomes a little man! maybe it's time for another one? hahaha! looking forward to what's in store for us next!

Tricks for Life Out and About with Max

im still figuring out life with a toddler in Vancouver. I definitely don't consider myself an expert in this department- some days i wake up and i'm like YES! and there are definitely days when i literally roll out of bed and am like ALREADY? ALL READY?! I wasn't a stay at home type of person before baby, and although some adjustments needed to be made after baby, im feeling like im rocking my old self again lately. Early days still are a killer, but just doing SOMETHING anything besides staying at home really adds quality to the hours of our day.

I thought i'd share a few little tricks ive learned as a new mamma of 1 for living life out and about. They really aren't genius by any means, in fact, probably your every day type of thing for some, but man alive it sure has made my life easier!

1) prepare frozen meals:
Before having a child, my husband and i were appalled at the thought of having frozen meals stored in our freezer. we werent great cooks, but we cooked at least 5 dinners out of the week. Through some simple meal planning a week ahead of time, we ate fresh and we ate well. Max is a clingy toddler, it's nearly impossible to prep or cook if you are with him alone. When im working day shift, im gone from 6am to 8pm and my family needs to eat. So a few days in a month, i set aside a time when i make a whole bunch of meals for freezing and for the next few weeks of day shifts to come, Gene can defrost food once they wake up --> the rest of the day to play --> heat and serve up food at dinner time with a simple turn of the oven knob. this really saves us from having to turn to fast foods for our family.

2) wear comfortable shoes
pre-baby, i wasnt a shoe freak. however, i did wear shoes that were not comfortable and required some breaking in processes (like blisters the size of nickels!). post baby, as my feet are vital to activities of daily living, i dare not buy shoes that require some pretty severe breaking in time or i'd be hurting and slowing any possible healing processes meant to occur! good supportive shoes are a must for long walks and fun in the playground and grass fields. on a stylistic note, not all supportive and comfortable shoes are runners or ugly nowadays. For the spring/summer season, ive been recently loving Saltwater Sandals!

3) babywear, babywear, BABYWEAR!
im not sure about your toddler but once mine hits the ground, it's a game of hide and seek where he's off running and hiding from me, and my time is spent chasing him, picking him up, him upset, i put him down ...and the cycle goes on and on. im babywearing Max wherever it's appropriate to keep him contained so i can 1) keep him safe and 2) do what i need to do within a reasonable amount of time. furthermore, im finding a lot of places are just not wheels friendly, and having Max attached just makes travel so much more simple. maybe because i started him on it from when he was a newborn, but It doesnt take much or anything at all to get him on the Ergo, in fact once he sees me buckle it on his arms raise up automatically! on the flip side, wherever it's appropriate, fly like the wind baby boy!

4) never leave home without snacks for baby
there are a few things i carry with me when i go out with Max coin purse (with plastics), phone, keys, pacifier, bus pass, and a snack for Max. as a transit user, my outings take nearly 1.5x longer in commuting time and in that span, Max won't have anything to eat from lunch hour to dinner hours. often Max is ok without eating, but i dare not risk not bringing him something to eat as a hungry baby is inconsolable! believe me, a hysterical hungry baby in a packed bus or sky train is not a pretty site.

5) find a way to nurture yourself
my way of nurturing myself is through plenty of retail therapy. i dont have to buy anything per say, but just walking around keeps me up to date with what's popular and kills 2 birds with 1 stone as babywearing is a workout all on its own. i achieve this time for myself by working around Max's poop time, feeding time, and nap time. The most ideal situation is we have lunch --> wait about 1/2 hour for Max to poop --> change diaper --> Max is ready for a nap --> up on the carrier --> zonked out! --> mama time!

let's hit the road mamma!

Life Lately

  • We spent mother's day stuffing our faces at Olive + Anchor at Horseshoe Bay. Have you been? Aside from the calamari and clubhouse which Gene raves about, I personally came for the Oysters Rockefeller- they were the best I have ever eaten. something about cheese, spinach, butter, bacon, and an oyster's texture that is so right. As expected i had hot flashes all day from the richness of this dish
the best picture of father and son that day

  • i had the tiniest of canker sores near my lower gum line, and of course the smaller they are the more painful they are. ive been optimizing the healing environment of my mouth because of this stupid thing and guess what happens last night? during Max's rumbling and tumbling sleep gymnastics, he drops his head on my face/mouth while i was sleeping and i just about screamed in pain. i held it in. it was more painful than childbirth
  • husband is away for the next 3 days doing some seasonal work and Max and I are alone together for the entire 72 hours. Today was day 1 and i was already feeling my patience nearly boil over at 1030am (we woke up at 730am). im pretty sure it's just me, because Gene says he's a baby when im around but totally different when im not around. Max just wants to be picked up and carried all.the.time and you know what? he's freakin' only 23lbs but feels like 30lbs. Dense. Solid. im hurting
  • i went out with some company who think my way of doing things is wrong and i make my kid uncomfortable. if they were other people, id tell them to fck off, but alas no...because i CANT. unsolicited, critical, nagging "advice" or "recommendations" especially from people who dont, by and large, spend more time with MY CHILD during the hard times really should be more of a pillar of support
  • my cat is humping this fleece blanket on top of my couch. he's neutered...what's up with him?
  • i had a great laugh with my friend Sarah about our changed menstrual cycles post baby. It was NEVER like this pre-baby. New moms beware!
  • Max despises the stroller, every time he's in it...it's a CIO session until i pick him up. I dont bother bringing this anymore. Life right now is so much more easier when im not using it. But, damn when he's heavier, i hope he chooses to walk more than me carry him on the carrier. Or at least hold my hand when crossing the street or how about not dart close to the boulevard when he sees big rigs pass by on the street. is that too much to ask?
  • i can't cook food, prepare food, or wash dishes if im the only parent in the house. Max seems to hate it when i do this. I can't help but think maybe he doesnt want me to do this...which paves the way for him to be trained earlier to do it for me? haha

  • We recently had, what i think was our first post rainstorm outing. i was totally unprepared for Max's curiosity and i dressed him in runners, jeans, light jacket- and he of course runs straight for the biggest puddle out there and falls in. Awesome! I learned my lesson the next day (after another rainy day) and let him run free in appropriate gear

oh is that piece of dirt for me Max? Thanks, you shouldn't have!

  • we upped this little man's bedtime to routine starting at 830pm and down by 9pm. he is still crying 2-5 hours after this but he's waking up sometime between 730-9am. who would've thought that sleeping in is defined as 9am? oh parenthood
  • Max's bedtime breastfeed session feels more like snack suckling rather than the i-want-breastmilk type of gulping sounds im used to. he's weaning me off!!
  • we went to the Brentwood Mall 'playground' the other day- why does it always smell like dirty diapers there? maybe i just have a sensitive nose? or maybe it's the parents/guardians who DONT PAY ATTENTION to their children and gab away to their friends instead. pardon me if i have to gently push your too-big-and-or-too-rowdy children away so they don't hurt my child
  • i found myself reflecting on how i judged parents pushing their McDonald's eating young child in the stroller- as i sat with Max at McDonalds giving him fries (no salt and flat pressed in napkins to soak up the oil of course ;-p)
im back to work soon, have a great week!

My family members are tanned in May

tell him to smile and this is his look!

This week felt like summer in Vancity and guess where i spent monday-tuesday-wednesday-thursday? AT WORK! I totally missed the entire week and then some of friday as i was in a state of post night shift hangover. Illustrated by Max and husbands sun kissed skin, all smiles, stained shirts from who knows what treats they've been eating, it seemed like it was quite the week of fun for them! Now im off, and it's raining...womp womp.

According to husband, Max has a girlfriend at school. oh ya know, a 4 year old girl who just won't leave Max's side. Beside him from the moment he arrives, asks husband if she hug Max constantly, and is just generally googly eyed for him. (Ive gone to school with him, how come ive never noticed this?) At this point, Max is not being bullied...why? because this little woman is his body guard. Some kid rips a toy from Max's hand, the girl goes up to the kid and takes the toy back, and gives it back to Max. By keeping him company, she's even inadvertently teaching him how to play appropriately with other kids. Cute! Thanks little girl!

too hot for clothes this week!

It's that time of year when our countdown to outdoor swimming begins. In fact, i've already stocked up on sunscreen (had to), a few UPF 50 shirts for swimming, and swim shorts. This year, we're going to go with part time disposable swim diapers as Max's poo schedule (and size of poop) is so erratic. When i'm off, i can clean the reusables, but if Gene is alone, he can't be cleaning shorts with the little restless man. I have to say i feel quite guilty about this because of the un-environmentally friendly factor but i think it has to be done. im saying N-O to poo floaties at the pool!

Along the same vein, Max and Gene have been sleeping under the tree at the park this week. Yes, no typo. They eat lunch outside and spread the sheet, and sleep under a tree providing shade. Max's room absorbs all the heat and it's just not comfortable to be there during the day. I dont know if i would personally do this, but it's kind of cute and Max apparently sleeps for 2+ hours. Boys!

a rare selfie. Max and i were both wearing stripes and red pants!

 ***  Happy Mother's Day!  ***

im not going to lie, i can't do this full time and i dont love every.single.minute of it. damn it's hard work but man alive i love this little one of mine and i would do anything and everything for him. xoxoxo

Germs are HERE

my sick little man

You know where Infection Prevention and Control doesn't happen? At THE Strong Start I go to.

There are caregivers in this neighborhood who take their actively coughing, nose dripping, toy eating, rambunctious kids to 'school' where there are healthy kids playing. If this is you, i'm giving you the middle finger for exacerbating the cesspool.

When Max catches a bug, Gene catches the bug. I have to take time off of work to allow Gene to get well while I put on my nurse hat at home (thank goodness for paid sick time). I've had to do this one too many times this year. Usually im able to ward off the bugs by popping 2 multivitamins a day when im feeling something brewing but this latest round is extra infectious because not only has Max gotten sick, Gene is sick, and I AM SICK! My boss must think im abusing the system as i've never called in sick so many times in my life (sorry!).

Is it really not common sense to let your kids stay home when they're sick? How about the concept of letting them rest...AT HOME? or at least AWAY FROM HEALTHY KIDS WHERE YOU ARE ENABLING THE SPREAD OF GERMS?

Ugh!

Little One Update

Little Max turned a whole f-o-u-r-t-e-e-n months on the 19th! I can't believe it myself, seriously wasn't i just pregnant? from my popular posts widget, my "37 weeks" story seems to get frequent traffic- a fun reminder at how time is flying right before my eyes.

yummy...flyers...

What's Max like these days you ask? Well he's a fun fun fun little boy who's personality is blooming each day. I think he's going to be quite the athlete judging from his super strength such as moving heavy furniture around the house, ability to independently hoist himself up on our couch that's about chest in height to him (as well as the twin bed in his room) and know how to get himself back down on the ground feet first. Instead of dragging toys around the house, he often chooses to pick things up (sometimes over his head) and carry the item(s) with one arm, and bring it to us - so so funny when you can see from his face how much he's struggling but he is just so determined to carry it!

I love how he knows his way from our parking stall, to the elevators, then up to our floor, out of the elevators and which way to turn to go home. This walking (sometimes nearly running) skill is a huge help when we're carrying up groceries and he can carry a small thing or so while i can help husband with the rest of the load. i love how he assists in putting his clothes on and off. if certain clothes are put on, it means we are following up with a predictable activity and he actually gets excited! Max appears to know what words mean when we say it in english and in tagalog- I'm thinking he's still babbling for the majority of the time but i won't be surprised if he just whips out a sentence one day when no other witnesses are around to hear it but me!

size 12-18months shirt and pants, size 6 feet

the little man already has his own music tastes and dance moves! he can moon walk and shuffle- but we see it as walking backwards and sideways. if he is particularly feeling the groove he stomps his feet on the ground and flaps his right arm like something that came out of the chicken dance. at anytime anywhere even while on the carrier, if he's feeling the music or likes the song being sung, he'll do an arm move somewhere between the chicken flap-a conductors arm waves-and raising the roof. he's got quite the eclectic taste!

at school, there are girls who already come up and try to kiss him (and have kissed him) or hold him. ive seen him back away independently but ive also seen him go for girls by means of pointing his finger close to their face and inch closer and closer until i intervene (and then he laughs). he likes girls with long hair (maybe because i have long hair?) and he'll go up to them stare, smile, giggle and attempt to play with their tresses. seriously, i cant resist him...i can't imagine what he'll be like when he is older!

scrambled or over easy?

Max has become a pretty good eater who knows what he likes, what doesnt taste good, and what he wants all the time if given the opportunity. He's feeding himself and doesnt often let me feed him anymore. he appears to love using his utensils though still needing some help in the piercing with a fork department. Fries or potato wedges seem to be our go-to treat, he loves these things whether baked or fried. i always judged moms before i became a mom when i would see their babies/kids eating fries but now, this is our bribe at restaurants when he just needs to be cooperative so we can eat hot food...it always works! What kid doesnt love french fries right?

As for sleep, he still sleeps in my arms for his first nap when i'm off work (Gene and him have his own technique). For his afternoon nap, i finally clued into using the carrier during this time and he often has naps while im on the go zigzagging around Vancouver trying to get retail therapy errands done. i purposely schedule my 'me' activities during this time as the movement of us lulls him to long naps while receiving the benefits of babywearing and mamma gets to chill out doing pre-baby activities (minus the ability to try on clothing). As for nights, not sure what's up lately but Max has been needing to co-sleep. Some brief CIO sessions once put down in bed, then he goes to sleep only to wake up 2-8 hours later crying and this is my signal to get up and sleep with him. sometimes i can stretch out our wakeup time from 6am to nearly 715am! I quite enjoy the cosleeping when i'm off, but brutal when i have work the next day as he doesnt sleep like a log but more like  a tazmanian devil with his need to always reposition and basically do a 360 revolution each night.. Thanks for the head butt! Thanks for placing your bum in front of my face! thanks for dropping your body weight on me! hahaha...always so cute though! he will never be so small again right? cherishing it!

this is his most entertaining skill

how can i say no to this face? xoxox

Right and Wrong. Wakeup Parent!

We've been taking Max to Strong Start oh for about 2 months now and yes, for the majority of the time he is there things are well, he is thriving, and having a lot of f-u-n! When Gene tells me how their school days go, there are always stories that include unruly kids who are CRAZY  need a time out and it makes me laugh. However, more often than not Gene tells me about kids who have picked on Max and this just makes me want to blow a gasket!

Ok, so kids will be kids and kids of the 0-5 age don't always know any better. I never hold it against the child per say, but i honestly feel a surge of heat and visualize an act of verbal assaults (directed at the parent) when i see/hear the parents are either absent (too busy gossiping with other parents), just let things go without telling the kid what they're doing is right or wrong and thus not correct them, or just present physically but too busy on their mobiles to even know WTF is happening.
  • mom is too busy chatting with her people and thus too busy to notice that her crazy son is terrorizing other kids (kicking toys, tackling other kids, running around like a mad person and creating hazards for the already over populated room)
  • the one f'n toy that Max is playing with, a kid rips it out of his hand and takes off (mom does nothing) - this happens one too many times
  • Max (13 months) is in the way of a kid (over 2 y/o) who wants to pass him, so the kid slaps Max on the chest or pushes him out of the way
  • Max is playing and having fun walking around, so a kid gets a pillow and shoves him "gently" to the ground
My blood is boiling. Max is one of the smaller and younger kids in the group, he is definitely vulnerable. What does Gene do when he sees these things? Fortunately, he's more in a state of calmness and will talk gently to the kid (or at least this is the story I get). When I see these things, I also say something in the realms of "be careful, he's a baby" or "Dont ________," sometimes the parent/guardian is present and right then and there we 2 adults 2 kids talk and settle. Again, other times....ARGH, i just end up giving the mom the evil eye as they're doing NOTHING. I cant believe the makings of a bully (and even the presence of bullies) start at these tender ages!

What should I do with these parents when they're not to be found? Im really inclined to say something snarky and condescending when i see trends in behavior and lack of parenting follow up. There really isnt a relationship with these women that i would be sorry to lose, but the peace keeper that i am i just dont want to start stuff up! I just want to protect my child, prevent my son from learning/adopting such behavior, and prevent these kids from becoming news headlines in the future!

It (was) Spring!

I was all uppity-up last week because it was actually sunny on my days off (can't say the same thing thing for this week though). I took Max to the sandbox for the first time near the school and though i took him to this field last year, it's so much more fun when he can run around and explore things on his own instead of being limited to the picnic blanket.

summer 2012!!

spring 2013!

yes he really is eating the sand! i had to do a lot of scooping that afternoon as this sand is no Cancun quality- always monitor your kids when playing in these things, there are pebbles and God-knows-what that's in there that is a total choking hazard! maybe eating sand is a rite of passage into official toddler hood as every toddler i've heard of does this too.

future track star?!

his favorite part was chasing after the large number of birds at the park. He loves birds! rolling down this hill a few times in attempt to catch this bird didn't deter him at all. I really had to put a stop to it when i started to visualize a bloody mouth, a head injury, or a broken bone (ok his rolls weren't really that extreme).

he continues to be a yogi in the making- here, downward dog

this was my least favorite part of our day- him going crazy with stairs. we live in a stair-free apartment, and him knowing how to climb up stairs the moment he was faced with one was really super cool. however, he wanted to keep going and going and going- i wish "Eye of the Tiger" was playing in the background as this was his Rocky moment! Furthermore, he has no concept of falling and attempted to just freely walk down the stairs without caution- as if it were a straight road. I nearly died. I dont even want to picture what i was thinking about if he ever fell down.

I am super excited about whats in the next few months...SPRING and SUMMER! Pools! Flowers! Beach! Chubby legs in shorts! Tshirt onesies! Toddler fun at a waterpark! Splash!!
